CD's cost too much
Message #13567
Could you elaborate on what exactly your product is? I'm thinking about getting a CD-ROM for my pc and so I'm interested in knowing what relatively low priced stuff is out there. Thanks, Andy.
The Reference Library
Message #13566
I have SETVER loaded in CONFIG.SYS and added both MSCDES.EXE and TRL.EXE (the program that starts The Reference Library) to the SETVER table. Still am returned to the DOS prompt when starting the product. Any other ideas?
Sounds like you need to run Setver. Kind of tricks the program into running under dos5. I had the same problem and once I got things set up I haven't had any problems. You can read about it in the dos manual. It is really fairly self explanitory. (If I…
The Manhole on CD

Dear Mr. Volk, Thank you very much for your reply, but I already have your program. My sister, who is seven, enjoys your program very much. She is always begging me to stop using to computer (Sure, right!) so she can play your game. Thanks again, David Liberty
John, your msg consisted of a header and nothing else. Please try again. Rob
MSCDEX 2.1 was written before DOS 5.0 was available and is looking for a DOS 4.0x version. The easy way out of this is to load SETVER in your CONFIG.SYS. SETVERs main purpose is to fake out various programs (like MSCDEX) that look for a specific DOS version. In this…
Place DEVICE=SETVER.EXE in your config.sys file. If you need help from Computer Library, our Tech Support number is 212-503-4444. Frank There is 1 Reply.

Check out "The Manhole" for DOS CD-ROM. It's got VGA graphics, voice and music via. CD-Audio, and it's even bilingual (English, Japanese). Have fun, William Volk There is 1 Reply.
Hi, DOS 5.0 comes with a program called setver.exe. Run it from your autoexec.bat file and it should clear up your problem. It did for me. As I understand it, when a program goes to dos for the version number, dos returns 4.01 instead of 5.0. Thanks Ralph There is…

Dave: You are welcome! Just don't *expect* rain, though! We have been having a water drought problem for quite a while, and rain is scarce. (Of course, my having told you not to expect rain will probably mean that you will leave your umbrella at home that day, and get…

Thanks for the confirmation that I'm not alone, Urs. I haven't asked Toshiba yet, but I'll post a question over there. I can't say I understand why all my other applications designed for color VGA run fine, even without special laptop "drivers," but displays are definitely one of the things…

CD's cost too much
Message #13523
Actually there are some things you would want a CD player to be able to do… 1. Decompress images and audio to speed up I/O and permit more images to stay in memory. 2. Have as much memory as you can afford. I'm hopefull that the SEGA's CD-ROM setup will…
Roger, You are welcome. I had somewhat the same problem when setting up our network. It's nice to be able to help once in a while rather than just get help . tim
I'll be looking for the Presidents CD. I hope they do Mammals with sound – it just makes sense. But even if they don't, this is one _great_ CD.
Danny, I've got the 2.2 driver, along with the new MSCDEX. What command line are you using for the driver/MSCDEX? Tim

The mammals movies run at about 9-10 frames/second. There is no sound with the movies in this version of mammals. National Geographic is working on a new CD-ROM called The Presidents: It All Started With George, which includes movies with sound. I just finished creating a demo piece for a…

Glad to hear everything went (relatively) well, Dwight. I'm a real novice so I'll really take it sloooow – if I ever get the system. Thanks for the info.
Rowby, You follow me around from WPSGA, to WGA to IGBBS. Nice to know I have a following and thanks for the info. It's not so much fonts and typefaces, it's just that the interfaces are SO DULL! Just because my NEC Clip Art 3D disc is Windows compatible, it's…

Maybe you'd have more success in the Mac forums. Many of the messages here are related to CDs that are available for both Mac and PC. Don't forget, there are many proprietary interfaces for CD-ROMs on the PC, which makes for more tech support issues that often get resolved in…
