NCGA Gathering Message #10104
From: Jeff Hester Autodesk Software Forum · General March 3, 1992 4:26 PM
What are folks plans for NCGA? Being local (somewhat) I'll be visiting, but probably only on Tuesday. Regards, Jeff Hester

Wow! Whoopee! Hurray! Uh, when do the prizes begin arriving? Jeff Hester
#9984 3D-Studio books Message #10000
From: Jeff Hester Autodesk Software Forum · Autodesk 3D Studio February 29, 1992 2:26 PM
What? Did someone call my name? Uh, yeah… AutoCAD 3D Design & Presentaion, NRP. If you have trouble getting it through your local bookstore, you can order direct from NRP at 1-800-541-6789. Regards, Jeff Hester
#9870 3D-Studio books Message #9876
From: Jeff Hester Autodesk Software Forum · Autodesk 3D Studio February 27, 1992 9:23 AM
Craig, Vahid: Actually, the title is "AutoCAD 3D Design and Presentation." It's about 1/2 AutoCAD, 1/2 presentation. The presentation half deals with hands-on techniques for using 3D Studio and Animator Pro. Most bookstores should be able to order it for you, or you can get it directly from New Riders…
#9834 #FLI files Message #9840
From: Jeff Hester Autodesk Software Forum · Autodesk Animator February 26, 1992 4:38 PM
Mike: Uh, yeah, sure you can grab a screen out of a FLI file…you need Autodesk Animator (or better yet, Animator Pro). I don't know of any of the public-domain/shareware variety players that allow "grabbing" a frame, but they could be out there. Regards, Jeff Hester
#9425 3D-Studio books Message #9502
From: Jeff Hester Autodesk Software Forum · Autodesk 3D Studio February 20, 1992 11:29 AM
Greg: It *was* at the "larger" B.Dalton's. New Riders recently ran the second printing, so it is probably available again. I think you'd appreciate the book a good deal, but I have to give Michele Bousquet the credit for the 3DS and Animator half. Michele is currently on a whirlwind…
#8324 #Color Printers ? Message #8326
From: Jeff Hester Autodesk Software Forum · General January 27, 1992 3:16 PM
Matt: You can get the HP500C for under $1000. (probably under $800). It does 300dpi, B&W or color. I've seen the output. B&W is not as crisp as a laser, but good nonetheless. You probably wouldn't want to use it for DTP except as a check print machine. Color looks…
Have a Weitek 4167-25 (for a 25mhz 486) that I cannot use! Normally retails for about $600+, but willing to sell for less. It works great, speeding up 3D Studio and Autodesk Renderman. All original packaging. What I NEED is a printer, preferably a laser or plain-paper ink-jet. I'd be…
#8046 arcitectual Message #8050
From: Jeff Hester Autodesk Software Forum · Autodesk 3D Studio January 20, 1992 5:29 PM
Sherwood: Me too! Learning is a never-ending process. Jeff Hester
#arcitectual Message #8022
From: Jeff Hester Autodesk Software Forum · Autodesk 3D Studio January 19, 1992 11:01 PM
Sherwood: Photorealistic rendering requires much more than a program. It takes talent. As with most anything, if you want to excel at it, you've got to do it. Do it a lot. And talk to anyone else who does it. As far as software goes, 3D Studio is my preferred…
#28792 Stacker and AutoCAD Message #28934
From: Jeff Hester Autodesk AutoCAD Forum · Applications January 16, 1992 9:58 AM
Andrew: I've been using Stacker 2.0 since the beginning of December. It works fine with AutoCAD R10 & R11. I can't comment on compatibility with Disk Manager (don't use it), nor on uninstalling. My guess is, you won't want to give up the additional disk space. BTW, I'm using the…
#28768 CAD Standards Message #28921
From: Jeff Hester Autodesk AutoCAD Forum · AutoCAD January 16, 1992 9:07 AM
Craig: Sounds similar to what I'm doing. The big exception is that I'll be checking for specific layer names, probably color and linetype, too. Did you write your routine in AutoLISP, or did you use one of the "read-the-DWG" utilities? My feeling is that reading the DWG would be MUCH…
From: Jeff Hester Autodesk Software Forum · Hrdware/Drvrs/ADI January 15, 1992 9:50 AM
Anil: Doesn't go to NTSC (bummer). And, uh, I *might* have overstated its maximum color depth. See the message from Kevin Krell. The price is approximate list. I haven't checked on discounts lately. Jeff (but, hey 16bit ain't bad) Hester
From: Jeff Hester Autodesk Software Forum · Hrdware/Drvrs/ADI January 15, 1992 9:50 AM
Dave: Actually, I *meant* 8-bit color (256 colors), not 8 colors. Their latest ADI driver includes the now common birdseye/spyglass options. I've been very happy with mine. Jeff Hester
From: Jeff Hester Autodesk Software Forum · Hrdware/Drvrs/ADI January 15, 1992 9:50 AM
Kevin: You would probably know better than I. I'm at work now, so I can't check (the Herc board's at home), but I *thought* the 3DS driver provided 24 bit color. Even if it is 16bit, that's suitable for my purposes (visual checks). Any *real* rendering or animation goes to…
#28615 #CAD Standards Message #28725
From: Jeff Hester Autodesk AutoCAD Forum · AutoCAD January 15, 1992 9:50 AM
Craig: I wrote a program about two years ago that checked the layers in a drawing against an external ASCII file. Any layers not found in the external list were written to a "report" file. It did the same for blocks, though in most cases it wouldn't be necessary. What…
#CAD Standards Message #28580
From: Jeff Hester Autodesk AutoCAD Forum · AutoCAD January 14, 1992 12:11 PM
Rick (and anyone else): I'm in the initial stages of planning for a drawing audit program which would "check" a group of drawings for compliance with company CAD standards. As I see it, it is virtually impossible to truely check a file for compliance; I see this program acting to…
From: Jeff Hester Autodesk Software Forum · Hrdware/Drvrs/ADI January 14, 1992 9:51 AM
Dave: Check out the Hercules Graphics Station+2. Handles AutoCAD at 1024x768x8, Animator Pro up to 1024×768, and 3D Studio the same, PLUS (this is beginning to sound hokey) you can get 24bit color for 3DS and (does anyone use this?) AutoShade. Yup, onscreen, at 512×480. Oh yeah, it handles Windows…
#7618 3D Studio Books Message #7639
From: Jeff Hester Autodesk Software Forum · Autodesk 3D Studio January 11, 1992 9:34 PM
Larry: I see David and Michael have already replied regarding 3D Studio books. Although the title may be somewhat misleading, about 1/2 of AutoCAD 3D Design and Presentation deals with the "presentation" side of things. The intent was a holistic treatment of the entire modeling-to-presentation process. BTW, the books goes…
Chaos & DOS 5.0 Message #6713
From: Jeff Hester Autodesk Software Forum · CA Lab/Chaos December 13, 1991 12:40 PM
Uh, actually *I* thought the reference was to the DOS 5.0 Getting Started booklet, not the Chaos getting started booklet. My copy of Chaos predates DOS 5.0 by a couple of months anyway. BTW, the LOADFIX command works great. I modified my CHAOS.BAT and everything worked beautifully (thanks, Dave). Jeff…
#6656 Chaos & DOS 5.0 Message #6662
From: Jeff Hester Autodesk Software Forum · CA Lab/Chaos December 12, 1991 5:36 PM
Dave: Go figure. Well, I don't feel so bad now. Now I understand why I use an "F" in "Read The Fine Manual." "F" works interchangably with so many other "fine" verbs . Jeff Hester
#6631 Chaos & DOS 5.0 Message #6646
From: Jeff Hester Autodesk Software Forum · CA Lab/Chaos December 12, 1991 11:10 AM
Larry and all: Thanks for your help. I must have missed the Loadfix command (I DID RTFM, honest!). Jeff Hester
From: Jeff Hester Autodesk Software Forum · Autodesk 3D Studio December 12, 1991 11:10 AM
Andrew: I'm using the Kurta IS/One and 3DS with no problem. I am not, however, using any of the Kurta's macro stuff. My autoexec.bat loads kurta as follows: c:\kurta\k_isps That's all (no k_mark, k_change, etc.). Try running k_isps "clean" (no macro, etc.), and see if that works. Jeff Hester
#6625 #Chaos & DOS 5.0 Message #6642
From: Jeff Hester Autodesk Software Forum · CA Lab/Chaos December 12, 1991 10:42 AM
Thanks, Dave. I knew I had just recently seen a message regarding this, but I don't use Chaos too often (at least, I haven't used it since upgrading to DOS 5.0). Next time, I'll RTFM *closer* . Jeff Hester
#Chaos & DOS 5.0 Message #6622
From: Jeff Hester Autodesk Software Forum · CA Lab/Chaos December 11, 1991 10:05 PM
I seem to recall that running Chaos under DOS 5.0 required some fiddling. For now I get a "packed file corrupt" error message when loading metashel.exe Any suggestions? Thanks, Jeff Hester
From: Jeff Hester Autodesk Software Forum · General December 10, 1991 9:22 AM
Dave: Have you been using 3D Studio? I started a model yesterday that will eventually be rendered and animated in 3DS. The model's being built in AutoCAD R11, however. That's where my roots are, and what I feel most comfortable with (at least under my current schedule). This should be…
From: Jeff Hester Autodesk Software Forum · General December 7, 1991 12:50 PM
Dave: I'd agree with Keven…3DS is a much easier environment for animation. Of course, budget constraints can be another matter (only if this is a "casual" endeavor). You could create a crude shaded animation with AutoCAD alone, using AutoFlix 2.0 to create a series of shaded AutoCAD slides, played back…
#21483- #STACKER COMPRESSION Message #21843
From: Jeff Hester Autodesk AutoCAD Forum · Hrdware/Drvrs/ADI November 25, 1991 9:54 AM
Greg: Well, I'm glad that you don't have any negative feedback. I think your skepticism is warranted; a friend of mine installed DoubleDisk on his system and has had to reformat and reload everything twice so far (geez, you'd think he'd learn). Jeff Hester
#21302- #STACKER COMPRESSION Message #21842
From: Jeff Hester Autodesk AutoCAD Forum · Hrdware/Drvrs/ADI November 25, 1991 9:54 AM
Larry: Stacker v2.0 comes with a custom version of Norton Speed Disk for optimizing your HD. The install routine automatically performs the first optimization after compressing existing files. What programs do you know of that require disabling the cache? Jeff Hester
