#103741 #Kickstart Go Boom Message #103760
How'd you get an A3000 that needs a kickstart file, and not get a Kickstart disk with it?
#102996 ToolManager 2.1 Message #103061
From: Jim Shaffer Jr. Amiga User Forum · New Amiga Users June 6, 1993 8:38 PM
Could you do an Info on the device and use ARexx to parse the name out somehow? I'm no Rexx guru, but it sounds like it should be possible.
#35137 Multitask Deficient Message #35139
From: Jim Shaffer Jr. Amiga Tech Forum · System Software June 6, 1993 8:33 PM
You can monitor scripts in 2.1, I'm not sure about 2.04, by typing "set echo on" into the shell. I'm not sure if this is documented or not.
#102924- #TCP/IP binaries and docs Message #102937

What's this running on? Ethernet? SLIP?
xprbimodem.library Message #102160
From: Jim Shaffer Jr. Amiga User Forum · Communications May 30, 1993 8:02 PM
What is this xprbimodem.library that was uploaded recently? Actually, I should rephrase that: first, what is it *supposed* to be, and second, what actually is it? The documentation appears to be the xprzmodem documentation with the string "z" replaced with the string "bi"…

HDBackup and BRU are fairly stupid in that all files take a minimum of 2K and will always take a multiple of 2K no matter how big they really are. This kills some of the benefit of compressing files.
From: Jim Shaffer Jr. Amiga Arts Forum · General Help April 25, 1993 9:25 PM
What do you mean by "convert file formats"?
IBM fonts for VLT Message #97215
From: Jim Shaffer Jr. Amiga User Forum · Communications April 25, 1993 8:13 PM
Does anyone have an IBM font that'll work with VLT so I can use it for general BBSing and not just VT-100 emulation? It requires a font that has 8 and 11-pixel versions, and the only ones I have only have the 8.

#96412 EPU Use??? Message #96414
From: Jim Shaffer Jr. Amiga User Forum · New Uploads April 20, 1993 7:48 PM
I haven't tried compressing any .info files yet since I don't use them for the particular files I've used EPU on, but I don't see why Workbench wouldn't see the uncompressed version when it loads them.
#96226 EPU Use??? Message #96413
From: Jim Shaffer Jr. Amiga User Forum · New Uploads April 20, 1993 7:46 PM
I've been using EPU on my 3000 for floppies, and the only weird thing I've had happen was when I mis-estimated how well a file would compress when moving it to a floppy. The disk got full, I hit "cancel" on the requester, and the CLI was hung. I had…
The last time I checked, they hadn't even released the developers kit for 2.1 for sale to the public, so I doubt there are 3.0 RKMs yet. You might want to ask in CBMSER, though it may not do you any good considering Commodore's policies on letting people know what…
Tried it with nothing extra running or patched in, and still no go. I'm going to e-mail the author.
#29065 Amiga utilities Help Message #29072
From: Jim Shaffer Jr. Amiga Arts Forum · General Help April 16, 1993 7:13 PM
I'm really not sure what you're saying. You have terminal programs for both machines, correct? So why not hook up what most people call a null-modem cable (a serial cable with the right lines crossed) and use your terminal programs without the modems? Or do one of you have an…
From: Jim Shaffer Jr. Amiga Arts Forum · Forum Business/Help April 16, 1993 10:01 AM
Hmmmm…. I checked the source code to make sure it really was supposed to work with 2.1 as documented, and not just 3.x/AGA, and I couldn't see anything out of order. I'm pretty much clueless now. I'm going to try it with absolutely nothing nonstandard in the system.
#95810 LhA News Message #95843
Thanks, I forgot about that.
From: Jim Shaffer Jr. Amiga Arts Forum · Forum Business/Help April 15, 1993 11:39 PM
I have a 3000 with Kickstart 2.04 and Workbench 2.1, and MandelSquare 1.6 doesn't run at all. It doesn't bother giving me any sort of error either. For comparison, MandelSquare 1.3 ran but acted weird, and I've had at least some trouble with all versions of Term through 3.1. (Haven't…
From: Jim Shaffer Jr. Amiga Arts Forum · General Help April 15, 1993 11:32 PM
Yes, I know that, but did you read the original message? The guy said he was using a piece of phone cable, cutting two wires, connecting a 9-volt battery to another one, and then dialing a bogus number on one machine and answering on the other. Sounds to me like…
BBS lists? Message #95766
From: Jim Shaffer Jr. Amiga User Forum · Communications April 15, 1993 8:41 PM
A friend of mine is trying to get more users on his new BBS. Does anyone know of anyone maintaining a BBS list that he could be added to? He's primarily Amiga-oriented, but he has IBM sections also. (By the way, the board is Snug Harbor at 717-321-0208 in Williamsport…
From: Jim Shaffer Jr. Amiga Arts Forum · General Help April 15, 1993 7:50 PM
What's all this about the null modem cable? Do I understand that you're actually using *modems*? Why not just connect the two serial ports (with the appropriate cable changes of course)?
#95536 #LhA News Message #95751
So what ever happened to LhA 2.00? I have a call for beta testers posted to Usenet on August 9th of last year.
#34164 Wild cards Message #34167
Right! Up through 3.x at least, MS-DOS had an undocumented routine to change the switch character. I found out that if you changed it to, say, "-", you could use "/" in pathnames. I also found out that it liked things like "/dev/prn" for the printer just fine…
#94584 2.1 presets/Tools Message #94710
You can keep the files in sys:prefs/presets or wherever you want. What you do when you want to use one is run BusyPointer, select Open from the menu, and then pick one of the files from the requester. Then, hit either the Save or Use button. (Make sure you've run…
#34057 BBS Programs Message #34070
From: Jim Shaffer Jr. Amiga Tech Forum · System Software April 8, 1993 9:40 PM
I don't know if the programs you mentioned are online or not, but if they are they'd be in AmigaUser rather than AmigaTech.
#94457 #2.1 presets/Tools Message #94571
First, the busy pointer preferences are a part of NickPrefs, not Workbench. Second, Sys:Prefs/Presets is just a place for storing prefs settings that you use often, so that you don't have to set them up by hand every time. The actual prefs settings that the machine is using at any…
#AmigaReport Message #94099
Does anyone have the first issue of the new AmigaReport? I've only seen #2 and #3 in the library.
#33804 Help! Message #33836
The necessary options are available on Compuserve to anybody. Maybe they're not in his offline reader if he's using one, though. Call me stupid, but I still use a terminal program 🙂
Quicktel? Message #33769
What's the Quicktel protocol I see on the end of the list? Is there an XPR library for it yet?
Thanks. By the way, have you ever run into a situation where a thread shows up on the menu, but when you try to read it you don't get anything (or maybe you get the next one, I can't remember.) I haven't seen it recently enough to point to an…
#33759 #Amigaguide Usage Message #33768
I just browsed through the library, and it looks like someone has re-uploaded AG.LZH and it's a little bigger than the version I downloaded a few days ago. I'm not going to download it right now to find out what 's going on, though…
#33756 Help! Message #33766
Since you said you had to take off an email header, it sounds to me like someone tried to send you a file by putting it directly into a mail message rather than attaching it to a message (or whatever Compuserve calls the process.) If this is true, it doesn't…
From: Jim Shaffer Jr. Amiga Tech Forum · Library News March 30, 1993 6:51 PM
LZH indicates that the file has been compressed with LhArc, LZ, or LhA (most likely LhArc, but the others can produce files compatible with it.) I know at least one of these exists for the IBM, try one of the IBM forums. Or, you can get one of them for…
You may remember me grumbling about a message I posted a week or so ago disappearing. Well, last night I posted a reply to message 93292 in section 1, and tonight it's gone. This forum is definitely eating messages.

#32887 GNU C compiler? Message #33042
From: Jim Shaffer Jr. Amiga Tech Forum · C Programming March 13, 1993 2:52 PM
Mark, Just wanted to say I got the disks you sent me. Thanks! I've got it working if I use inline functions, but I can't get it to work with a copy of amiga.lib converted to libamiga.a. (Which I'd like to do, since I don't have enough memory to use…
#32603 NewList upload Message #32667

It looks about the right size for version 7, which I have, but I thought that was already here. Don't worry about it.
#90335 narrator-i need it! Message #90556

Not legally. For some reason, Commodore wasn't allowed to ship it with 2.1 or 3.0.

You'll have to use your 2.0 narrator.device, and any of the other speech software for that matter.
#31697- AMIGA SOUND Message #31756
From: Jim Shaffer Jr. Amiga Tech Forum · Forum Business/Help January 31, 1993 2:32 PM
I found out by trying it that a program called SoundConvert, that was supposed to work on Mac and Atari sounds, would convert WAVs to 8SVX. I don't know whether it's in the libraries here.
Deep Thought Message #85795
From: Jim Shaffer Jr. Amiga User Forum · Communications January 19, 1993 11:28 PM
I used to call Deep Thought, the BBS run by The Software Distillery, occasionally, but I haven't been able to connect to it for a month or so. Does anyone know if it's moved, or down?
From: Jim Shaffer Jr. Amiga User Forum · Forum Business/Help January 3, 1993 5:29 PM
What is the deal with 3.0 anyway? I've heard from any number of people that it'll run on a non-AGA machine, so why didn't they just skip 2.1 and go straight to 3.0? (I've also heard that 3.0 has bugs, but they could've sent out free updates later like they…
From: Jim Shaffer Jr. Amiga User Forum · Forum Business/Help January 3, 1993 11:01 AM
AmigaDOS 3.0 apparently comes with AmigaGuide. I, and a lot of other people, thought it would be in 2.1 based on the number of PD programs released that used it, but apparently Commodore got stupid and decided to make it 3.0-only.
#31172 MEMORY VIRTUAL Message #31192
From: Jim Shaffer Jr. Amiga Tech Forum · System Software January 3, 1993 10:58 AM
It's the pixel in the upper left-hand corner. If you haven't upgraded to the 2.04 ROM yet, try it. You won't even get through your startup-sequence because the old ROM expects some of the now-internal commands to be on disk, but you can look at the radically-different gadget images.
#31162 #MEMORY VIRTUAL Message #31167
From: Jim Shaffer Jr. Amiga Tech Forum · System Software January 2, 1993 3:27 PM
I'm not quite sure you've gotten my point yet. There are 3000s that have a very old 2.0 ROM in them that's used to load a Kickstart file for either 2.0 or 1.3 from the hard disk. So there *is no way* to get Kickstart out of ROM, unless you…
#25162 #GIF89A Conversion Message #25163
From: Jim Shaffer Jr. Amiga Arts Forum · General Help January 1, 1993 5:12 PM
I run HamLab's "gif2hl" filter on GIF89A's, then run the HL file through Wasp. One thing you may want to try, is to use a binary file editor such as NewZAP or a text file editor that handles binary properly (such as TxEd (commercial)) to change the "9" to a…
#83425 #uudecode Message #83428
From: Jim Shaffer Jr. Amiga User Forum · Communications January 1, 1993 12:44 PM
Look in the libraries and see if there's a uudecode program. I don't know whether there is or not. If not, let me know and I'll upload it for you. I know it's here in the UUCP archive, but that's quite a bit to download for one program!
