#1088 Gardenias Message #1189

I've had good luck with gardenias in a west window, in a kitchen, so the humidity was high. They need acid soil, and they need iron. Check for a fertilizer which provides both. I can't give you a name; I haven't grown them for a while.

Right. He doesn't exactly jump in. Sort of teeters until he slips. That's not that dignified either, though.

It seems that loving cats and loving houseplants go together….

Wonderful idea! His newest talent is opening the kitchen cabinets and wandering through them. A few balloons in there might be a great idea!

The plants aren't lasting. I'll have to get more. He's killed plants which had been thriving for 18 yrs. including several moves to new environments. I hope the little brat will grow out of this stage. He's 10 months old now.

Do you have any idea where to find Bitter Apple spray? Pet store? Garden shop? I've never seen it. It really worked with your kitten? Need I say this guy will chew other things besides just the plants. Yes, the Pet forum is great, isn't it?

For a while this little guy got squirted so much he rarely had a chance to dry off! It only made him angry and more determined. I rarely squirt him any more; it's reserved for nasty biting now, which rarely happens. Isolation works better. Gives him a chance to think…

So someone else has this problem, too? I feel better now!

The Cat section is excellent, full of wonderful people (and cats) who have given me advice neither Alfred the Bad nor I would have survived without. You wouldn't believe how many problems this cat has brought up to solve, especially considering that I've had at least 20 reasonable cats before…

A mild solution of Ivory soap and hot pepper! A great idea! I'll try this. I have the awful feeling that a catnip plant probably started this cat on his plant obsession, now that you mention it. He and the plants had co-existed peacefully until my son brought over a…

Thanks. I'm going to try the screen idea. You don't happen to know of a houseplant which sits low, is tough, and tastes very bad without being poisonous, do you? Something like that might do the trick. I've got to find some way to discourage Alfred the Bad's interest in…

This cat doesn't do much chewing on leaves. He likes to play with the plants, leaping at them (hiding under the bed after breaking a pot) and batting the leaves around. Of course, when he lands splat on top of something delicate, that's that. He goes insane when I water…

Whoops! I did get this message (reply coming). There was another rather long message, not about cat but about the forum itself, that got lost.

This is hard to believe, but my cat — the same brat that's destroying my plants — stepped on the computer before I could read or save your welcoming message, sending it to never-never land! I'm sorry, but could you please send it again?

Help! Having moved to NYC, I had to give up my garden. I grew house plants with great affection. Now I have a small young cat who LOVES plants. Loves them to death, that is. Has anyone had this experience? Is there any way to live with both this cat…
