3000 System Purchase
7 messages in this thread
It looks like I'm buying an Amiga 3000 and 1950 multi-sync monitor
tommorow. Can some of you recent '3000 purchasers offer any advise?
Is the 1950 the monitor to get, or should I look at the new Sony 14" multi?
I've found an authorized dealer in Eatontown, NJ who'll sell me both for
$3950. Is this a good price?
What about compatability with my main programs: ProPage, ProDraw, Word
Perfect, CanDo, DPaint III, and SuperBase 3.0.
The price for the machines includes: 25MHz CPU, 5MB RAM, 100MB Quantum Hard
Drive, 1950 moniter (which I assume comes with the cable). Is there
anything else I should get right away?
Any tips would be greated appreciated.
Roger
P.S. Also, can anyone recommend a good 300+ dpi B&W scanner compatable with
the 3000?
Roger,
It sounds like the system you're getting is rather complete. Can't
think of a thing you need need with the exception of another meg of ram.
Configured as 5M total, that means that your system will have 1M of chip
ram and 4 meg of fast ram. I'd make that 2M of chip, and, once that 1M has
been moved over to the chip side, you'll need to add 1M more of ram to the
fast side (the 3000 can be expanding in 1M or 4M increments on the Fast
side, depending on the chips used).
The 1950 is an excellent (altho pricey) monitor. If possible take a
look at the 3000 with both monitors hooked up to it and see what you like
better.

Thanks for the quick response. Yeah, actually I'm getting the second MB of
chip RAM and a second internal 3.5" drive too.
As for the monitor, I've done that and believe it or not, prefer the 1950.
I'll keep my original 1080 (with the matte finish!) hooked up to the 3000
too, just to remind me what that flicker looked like.

Roger, you might get the A3000 on educational discount and get the
monitor separately. You might look into the NEC 3D which is basically the
best respected monitor over all for this.

According to the list I got from here someplace, the Individual Educational
Discount price for exactly what you've described is $3948, so, YES, you've
got an excellent price. If you are getting this AS an Educ. Discount, then
the 1950 is $399, which is a lot less than you'll find any other good
multisynch for.

Yeah, actually, I do qualify for the teacher's discount, but it looks like
I don't need it.

Unfortunately that was the (incorrect) February 1 list. The CURRENT list
says that the Individual Educational Discount price for the A1950 is $520,
not $399, and for the A3000-25/100 (w/5megs) is $3421, not $3549 (HUH!)
Sum is $3941, not $3948 (Big deal, right?) Well I discovered this when I
was pricing replacement for my dead 1080 monitor. I THOUGHT it would be
$200 to repair it, $200 to get a NEW 1084S, or $400 for a 1950, and I would
get the de-flickerer later. At $520, I'm not sure….
