#Arexx availability

I'm finding an increasing amount of utilities and programs that require
Arexx, but realize that it's no longer sold (to the best of my knowledge)
since it will be included in 2.X.
Is there any way I can get it prior to that (since I'm not convinced
that I'll get 2.X right away anyway)?

Bill Hawes is still selling AREXX, and has just released an update in the
past few weeks. Your dealer ought to have it.

Karl, ARexx most certainly is still available — I'm shipping out many
copies every month through the Amiga dealer and distributor system.
It will remain available for sale as long as there's a demand for the
product. If your dealer doesn't have it or doesn't want to order it, you
can order a copy direct from my company.

Well, goodness me! The venerable Bill Hawes himself!
That's good. I thought I had heard that the inclusion of Arexx into 2.0
meant that it hadn't been sold for some months; glad I was wrong. I'm
anxious to try out some new features of Performer2.0 that require Arexx,
and I'm not at all sure that I'll be grabbing WB 2.0 immediately. I have a
pretty good dealer here; I'll see if he'll order it. I have no idea how
much it costs, but I'm sure I'll find that out too.

Bill, the previous message mentioned an Arexx upgrade, recently. Is a
notice in the mails? (I've got 1.10). Do you know what is going to be done
about Arexx upgrades for those who get it with 2.0?

Jim, You should have received an update notice concerning ARexx V1.15; they
were mailed out about 6 weeks ago. If you've moved since the last update,
please email me your current address and I'll update my customer records.

Humm…I never received any notice of a v1.15 upgrade, and I
haven't moved since I bought ARexx. I was on the 'autoupgrade' list…did
you stop that procedure?

Yes, auto-upgrades had to be discontinued due to significant losses for
non-payment of update fees. In some cases the disks probably never arrived
because of address changes, but a floppy disk in a mailer makes for an
expensive postal probe.

I can understand that, with postal rates what they are, I was
surprised you even offered the auto upgrade. I am surprised though that
folks asked for the auto upgrade option and then didn't pay for it when
they got it…that's not nice.
So anyway…back to my problem…I never got (or don't recall ever
getting) a notice on a new upgrade…could you possibly send me one again?
You should have my address in your files. If you don't…I'll email it to
you.

Bill, Do you know what version of ARexx will be shipping with WB2.0? (or
is shipping now?) I just received my 1.15, and need to know if I write
some ARexx programs for someone with a 3000/WB2.0, will they run? (ie. if I
use features of 1.15 in the programs)
Should 1.15 upgrades be handled only through you? If I know someone who
owns 1.10, can I just give them a copy of the 1.15 disk or not? (always

In general the version of ARexx shipping with any release will be the
latest available at that time. When the 2.0 Enhancer packages ship, the
ARexx version will be at least V1.15, but further changes may have been
made.
Writing programs to use specific features of ARexx, or f the OS for that
matter, really depends on the application. If there's no other way to do
it, then the decision is simple, but otherwise you'll just reduce the
potential user audience. Despite my attempts to get updates out to
everyone, there will be some users running V1.10 for a long time, just as
there are a few with V1.06 or even earlier releases.
The modest update fee for the update disk goes towards paying back the time
it took to make the improvements; copying the disk so that others can avoid
ordering an update reduces the resources (and incentive) to make future
improvements.

Thanks for the answers. I've got 1.15 now, but think keeping things 1.10
workable for the present is a good idea (for months, at least).
I know some others who do own ARexx, but haven't received any update card
yet. Whether its for lack of mailing in reg card, or moving; I don't know.
I'd certainly never copy it for anyone else unless I had permission first;
it was the fact that the upgrade was so reasonable that made me think that
you were just trying to cover costs and wouldn't mind if it was given to
other guaranteed owners. I'll have them contact you.
I certainly want you to have some incentive to upgrade. I *hope* you're
making a bundle off the WB2.0 deal. In my opinion the increased
availability of ARexx on most machines (all 3000's, and 2.0 Enhancer kits,
etc) will virtually require most vendors to include interfaces in their
products. And that is good. –jp–seattle–

A propos of this question, DO you know what the upgrade policy will be

ARexx updates from my company will continue to be handled in the current
fashion fo all registered users. I can't speak for Commodore, but to the
best of my knowledge software updates from Commodore will be made available
periodically as "Enhancer Packages".

Do you have, or know of any, sample code that shows how to run an ARexx
script from within a program? It can't be as simple as "execute script"
can it? Even tho I'd had ARexx since the beginning I still know little
about it.

Jim, ARexx V1.15 update disks are $10, and you don't need to send in the
old disk. It does help to include your serial number though; makes it a
little easier to pull your address out of the customer files.
We accept checks, money orders, and MC/VISA charges.

I just purchased an older version of AREXX. Can I send an upgrade payment
with my warranty card to get the upgrade or have I already sent my card in?
I can't seem to find it….

I don't seem to have a listing for you in my customer file, at least under
the name "Rex Suba". If you can't find the registration card, just make a
photocopy of the ARexx disk label and send me your current address, and
I'll add you to the customer list.
