Has anybody tried using AMAXII with a MAC scsi CD-ROM drives and CD s/w?

Raman, I've been trying to get a NEC CDR-35 to work with my Microbotics
Hardframe 2000 and AMax II on my 3MB A-2000, but no luck so far. I think
the problem is in the driver, but so far the scsi.amhd driver from the
AMaxII utilities and the hddisk.device in my devs directory haven't worked.
There may be another problem in that the NEC player has a built-in SCSI
terminus, and must be the last SCSI device in a daisy-chain (which is the
set up I'm using with my DH0: on the Hardframe SCSI controller). I'm in a
quandry over who to call for help — Commodore, Microbotics, or ReadySoft!
Any suggestions would be very welcome!
Kathy BTW, the drive works fine on a Mac SE, so it's not the hardware.
Have you tried using another HD controller with AMAXII and MAC CDROM? I
have GVPII and SupraWORDSYNC in my A2000 (8MB) connected to 330MB plus
SyQuest44MB and Quantum 105s. SyQuest is dedicated to AMAXII.

Raman, I tried a couple that came with AMaxII. Do you have a source for
additional drivers? I think I tried scsi.device and hddisk.amhd already. I
have found an Amiga user in town who has a SCSI HD working on AMaxII, so
I'm going to see if he can help, too. Thanks for your reply!

You will need a driver from the company that made your SCSI
interface. Check with them to see if one is available for Amax. If not,
then you won't be able to use a hard drive.
Steven, I'll give them a call, thanks. On a related subject, I talked
today with David Rosen of C= (Dir of Int'l Mktg), who told me that as of
yet it would be impossible to link a 3rd party CD-ROM player to an Amiga,
due to lack of drivers. I'll keep looking… your tip of calling the SCSI
board mfgr is a good one.

I'm not aware of any way to hook up a SCSI device to run through
Amax without the proper driver. There are only a handful of mfgrs with
SCSI interfaces which have available Amax drivers. ICD, Supra, GVP, CBM
(for the 2090), Trumpcard, Kronos (just began shipping) are the major ones
I can recall. According to the Amax docs you can use a Mac SCSI device,
but you still need the proper driver for your SCSI interface. I have the
Supra WordSync, which works well, although it is not too reliable with
external drives. Supra suggested terminating their interface, but I had
already switched to the internal drive, so haven't tried that out. I don't
know if the others would have similar problems or may not be designed to
access an external drive. The Kronos driver hasn't arrived yet (I also
have that one), so I can't speak for it, presently.
Steven, Thanks. I don't guess you know if Microbotics has a SCSI driver?
That's the board I have. I'll probably call them to see. It's a real pain
to have to wait for my husband to bring his Mac home from work before I can
look at my Nautilus columns! It's good to know what I need to ask for,
though. I was really fumbling around at first, not knowing what it was
going to take to make it work. 'Preciate it!

No, I don't know if Microbotics' hard drive system yet has an Amax
driver, but calling will surely reveal the facts. If they don't you can
always buy another product. Hard drive interfaces are now relatively
cheap. Of those out there you can read various reviews and tests to find
which is the 'best' product. I understand that Trumpcard has a new
'professional' card which they claim to be extremely fast and ICD's card is
also supposed to be very fast. I've been happy with my Supra, tho it isn't
as fast as some of the newer boards it is more than satisfactory.
Thanks for your reply. I think I could probably find a hard drive i/f, but
what I really need is a CD-ROM driver. I got a note this evening in email
from a fellow who's a Microbotics rep, so maybe I can find out something
definite on the availability. I'll pass it along when/if I do.

I'm almost certain that Commodore has a CD-ROM drive that will be available
pretty soon, and it will have a driver. They have one to go with CDTV, you
know, and it is VERY easy to adapt that to work with any Amiga. I suspect
you will see it as soon as CDTV is launched.
