#AMAX HD partition ??

It's been awhile since I've been on compuserve. Keyboard dies on me. I
just got a DataFlyer HD interface for my A500 for Christmas (works like a
charm by the way, although if you're using a refurbished Apple HD20 drive
like I am, I'd recommend a muffin fan to prevent overheating). I have a
question though. I'm trying to get a HD partition to workwith my AMAX II.
I've modified the mountlist so that the device is called AMAX:; changed the
mount=1 to mount=0; mount the drive prior to running AMAX. So far so good.
Although when I issue the mount command I don't actually see the drive
AMAX: on the workbench until I issue a DIR command in the shell. So I run
AMAX, everything works beautifully, the happy mac appears, the floppy drive
mounts; the AMAX then recognizes my AMAX partition, and that it is not
formatted properly, asks if I want toformat it. I answer all the dialogs
correctly and AMAX supposedly formats the partition, I get the formatting,
verifying and creating directory dialogs but they only take about 2
seconds, and the partition doesn't mount on the Mac desktop. If I then
restart AMAX asks me to format the drive again. The AMAX: partition is set
up to be 6 Mb. Does anyone have any ideas about what is going wrong? Any
help would be greatly appreciated.

In your mountlist, make sure that:
1) your mount entry is AMAX (as you said it is)
2) that the device = scsi.amhd (or whatever driver matches your contoller)
3) that the driver noted in that listing is in your devs directory.
As an example, I have a hard drive partition on my 2091 controller and the
mountlist entry looks like this:
AMAXHD: Device = scsi.amhd6
That way when you use the mount command prior to running AMAX, the system
will know which device driver to use.

Thanks. I'll try that and let you know how it works. I've done everything
except that my device = is set to ExpSys.device. I have the ExpSys.amhd in
the Devs: directory.

Michael, I have modified the mount list to specify device = ExpSys.amhd,
and there is a device ExpSys.amhd in my devs: directory on DH0: which came
with the DataFlyer. But when I run AMAX II the same thing happens,
everything goes fine until it asks me to format the AMAX partition. Then
it says formatting drive, verifying drive, creating directory, all in about
2 seconds, and refuses to mount the partition. If I exit AMAX or restart,
it asks to format the partition all over again. I have tried using SCSI
probe from the Mac side to mount the drive but it does not see it as an
available SCSI device, only the Mac Plus ROMs. It does give me the message
that the bus is not terminated. Would the fact that my partition is small
(6 Mb) have anything to do with it? Thanks for any help. \\//brad collins

Brad: It shouldn't. What happens if you hit F1 and format your ram disk
(after the mac finder screen has come up?) Does that format ok?

I haven't tried that yet. I'll let you know. Thanks for all your help
looks like it may be time to call ReadySoft and/or Expansion Systems. I do
know that I have not got the most recent release of AMAX II, so maybe
that's it. Thanks again, I'll let you know what I find out.

What is the name of your AMAX partition (from the Mountlist entry)? Are
you using the mount command on the partition from Amigados prior to
launching AMAX?

It's just called AMAX: I do mount AMAX: from AmigaDOS prior to launching
AMAX II, but when I do, I don't see a disk mounted on the workbench unless

I have a question re: AMAXII also. My system config is:
5MB RAM GVP Series II A500-HD+, with 80MB Maxtor HD and 2.04 installed.
What I'd like to be able to do is eliminate the AMAX: harddisk icon from
appearing on the workbench. Thus far, the only way to achieve this is to
hold both mouse keys at system startup and disable the AMAX: partition.
Does anyone have a clue as to another "hands-off" method? (especially since
I'd like to still have the partition mounted, just not displaying the icon)

Lorenz:
Go into the HDToolBox and change the file system to reserved partition.
This will stop the icon from showing up on the WorkBench. At least it does
for me.
You should backup your AMAX partition before doing this as I think
HDToolBox will delete the partition when you change the file system.

I was under the impression the HDToolBox was only for CBM HD's… I'll try
it though. Thanks for the tip.

Chances are you'll see a line in your mountlist entry for AMAX: that looks
like:
mount = 0
if so, if you change the 0 to 1 so that it says:
mount = 1
then you shouldn't need to do a dir of it to get the system to recognise
it.

Sounds like a problem with the SCSI driver. I had the exact same problem
with my B2000 and GVP SCSI board, until GVP rewrote the SCSI driver. then
no probems in the past 10 months.
You might want to check on the availability of a newer driver from
ReadySoft.

Thanks, it also occurs to me that when I was having problems with my ICD
AdRAM and AMAX II I called ReadySoft and they told me that I didn't j have
the mostrecent version of AMAX II either. Guess a call to them would be in

driver.
