Help!
I'm getting spurious characters inserted at random due either to a
noisy phone line or a failing modem. Which is it? It only ppens at 2400
baud, downloads work fine, and there's never any bad characters in the
output stream (the stuff printed by CIS, for example.) If it's a bad
phone line, wouldn't the gunged up te{{x{w3oky}~*t er, text, {appear{
com{{ing and going? It's {getting worse, too! w3E arrgh!w3

I see the {'s and sometimes worse too — and, unfortunately am not sure
if its my phone line or my modem… except that its worse after the modem
has been on for a while, and worse in the evenings. I'm using a CTS
Datacom Plus, 2424ADH… When I dial CIS, I usually listen to the line
after the modem dial, and before CIS answers, and if there's a lot of
static I usually hang up & try again.

Jeff, The 2424ADH is particularly sensitive to noise – I had one but gave
it away about 3 years ago. The Supra 2400 baud modems are very good —
especially their MNP models. When running with MNP you'll probably never
see line noise again.

Thanks for the info. I'll probably just suffer with this modem for a
while (it's on loan from a company I'm consulting for… ie free), and save
my pennies for one of the new 9600 jobs.

I once had to drive from Portland to Estacada, and noticed that I was
going to pass through Boring, Or. on the way. I thought, "Gee, I gotta be
sure to see this place." Despite my vigilance, I abruptly found myself in
Estacada, having missed Boring entirely during the night. Must be a
well-named place!
Regarding modems, mine is momentarily behaving, but threatens to get
weird any moment. I have an old Avatex 2400 which always runs at about 110
degrees F. In fact, I sent the first one back to the company on the
grounds that it had to be malfunctioning to generate all that heat. Do the
other brands get anywhere close to this hot? Might my modem be slowly
frying itself? My problems also seem to get worse when the thing's been on
for a while…
Actually, I'm quite surprised at how well behaved the dodad is today…
when I left my last message, I had to go into chat modem and erase
frantically as more and more spurious characters kept showing up.

Strictly speaking I don't live in Boring, although part of the farm
extends into it, I think. It is aptly named. If you had to drive thru the
treacherous "Carver Curves", you went right by my place.
Heat does seem to be an issue with my modem — if I space out and
leave some papers or other mess on top, and then use the modem, it gets
worse quicker. My current work-around is to 1) sit it on it's side to
maximize air circulation, and 2) turn it on only when in actual use.

Jeff,
At work, we bought a dozen 2424ADH's a few years ago. We had
nothing but trouble with them…in particular, line noise. However, we
don't worry about that any more….every one of those 2424ADH's ended up
failing so they were all replaced with Supra Modem 2400's which are working
just fine.

I have been experiencing problems with DL with my Courier V.32/V.32bis,V.42
v.42bis modem using JRComm I have the modem set to hardware flow control,
on the send and receive modes, I have the DTE rate locked at 19200 baud, I
set JRComm to CTS/RTS, I have preferences set to 8n1,CTS/RTS handshake, a
buffer of 8K, the baud rate set at 19200. Also I set the priority set on
JrComm to 5. If anyone could help me I would appreciate it as I am growing
f frustrated with spending time online and not being able to UL/DL
anything.
