Don't forget that this ZOOM 9600 is not compatible with the HST 9600 or 14400 at any speed higher than 2400bps so be carefull before buying such a modem because most Amiga BBS are only HST compatible at high speed!! Pat – via Whap!

Bob, this is the same modem I bought recently from Direct Micro… I am *very* happy with it. It is a v.32/v.42/v.42bis modem and it implements the 12000 bps fall-back mode of v.32bis! This means that if you use this modem to connect to a v.32bis compliant modem the data connection is made at 12000 bps. I have seen download rates around 1350 cps using this modem in the "turbo" (v.32 fall-back) mode. I use it for CompuServe access ( 9600 & below only) and it's great when combined with Whap! ( Assuming you have a 9600 node available.) It should work with an unaccellerated A500 but depending on the terminal program, the CPU may have trouble keeping up at high data rates. How big is it? Hmmmmm, it's big, about 11.5 x 8 x 2 inches. It has a nice set of status lights on the front panel (much better than my previous v.32 modem). Is it any good? See above 😉 Is it worth the money? Only you can answer this, of course, but for me it was (And I paid *more* than $309!). But before you jump into the high speed modem world, consider a few points: 1. v.32/v.32bis modem prices are dropping *very* fast. 2. If you can wait awhile you may be able to get the same speed modem for less money. 3. Supra is supposed to be shipping a v.32/v.42/v.42bis modem (fax also) for a suggested *list* of about $300 in January! Wonder what the street price will be? And no, this modem will *not* talk to HST modems above 2400 bps. However, IMHO, HST *only* boards are a vanishing breed, as most of the ones I connect to are Dual-Standard (meaning they are both HST and v.32bis). Of course, you should check the boards/services *you* use to determine if v.32 is the way to go for you. Hope this helps, Bill – via Whap!
