#CD-ROM use help

Anyone got any tips for running CDTV titles on an A3000 equiped with
an NEC CDR-80 cd-rom drive? Everything seems fine on most data
cd-roms in that I can browse the dirs and subdirs dow to the deepest
levels but when roaming around in CDTV discs I seem to get 2 or 3
sub-dirs deep then they kick me out to the root dir! I am using
CDROM-FS version 0.702 and would appreciate all tips you may have!

I have a Chinon CD-ROM unit hooked to my Amiga 2000 also using v.702 of the
DCROM-FS and havn't had any problems reading CDTV titles at all. The big
question I have is how to run some of the titles. Many CDTV titles have a
regular WB interface, and can be run by just double clicking on their icon,
but several others don't seem to work at all, crashing the machine if
tried. In particular I've tried to run the CDTV version of Lemmings on my
machine with no luck, although I've seen others that have said that it
works with no problems.
The only CDTV title I have found files that look like icons on is
this Hypermedia Fish v1.2 disc, but when I open his disc icon I see
nothing. I do know some of the programs will require reassigning the
c: l: libs: fonts: devs: and such over to the disc. I was also told
to change the name of the drive to CD0: in the mountlist because that
is the device name of the drive in a CDTV. But alas…I need more
info!
The Xiphias titles (TimeTable of History series, Silver Palette Cookbook,
AH Dictionary, and Grolier's Encyclopedia) all contain an icon that should
run them from the standard desktop. I recall there was a problem on one of
the titles that had a bad script associated with the icon.
You can run the titles from inside a shell quite easily. Be sure you are
in their root directory to run.
Let me know if you have problems with any of the titles and i'll try and
help.

Jerry: Thanks for the tips on the Timetable disc you posted me over in
cdrom forum. I'll try them tonight. I am still having trouble just
reading the blasted directories. My NASA data discs function fine, and let
me get dirs and files down 5 and 6 subdirs deep. The Fish disc did show me
a lot of files in the root dir I had not seen in previous attempts but that
only happened once. I don't think I am getting the whole dir showing. The
discs are demos from a local dealer and have a fair amount of surface
scratches so I wonder if that is the problem. More later…

I have both a CDTV & a CD-ROM for my 2500. Should I be able to run the
Grolier's Encyclopedia & the Illustated Enclopidec dictionary from my
CD-ROM drive equipped A2500? I have the drive mounted as CD0: and I'm using
the CDROM-FS, and I have no problems reading the disks, but the system
guru's if I try to run the programs. Can you give me any pointers to make
it work right?

You might want to get the CD-ROM software from Xetec. They sell the
software seperately now. Most CDTV titles run just fine, even under 2.04

I have a Xetec CD-ROM and had been running the Time Table of Science on it
just fine under the Amiga 1.3 operating system for nearly a year. It's a
really nice example of multimedia.
However, I updated to the 2.04 operating system a couple of weeks ago and
now the disc won't run. It gives an error message unable to load screen. I
tried the disc in a CDTV and it loads just fine, so I guess the problem
isn't from a scratch on the disc. I never got around to sending in the
registration for the TTOS disc, but I still have the form and the original
disc if there is an upgrade that will run under 2.04.
BTW, some CDROMS that were REAL flakey under 1.3 now work flawlessly under
2.04, such as the Illustrated Bible and Illustrated Sheakspeare from
another company :>) (I had planned on tossing those two until getting 2.04,
I still may, they were disappointing compared to other CDTV titles).
So far, the TTOS is the only CDTV title I've tried that doesn't run under
2.04 on the Xetec. I'd like to get the Time Table of Business, Politics
etc. and also the Groliers Encyclopedia if they are available seperately
without buying a CDTV unit and will run under 2.04. I really don't want to
go the option of a rom switcher board if I can avoid it. I guess I could
use a floppy to boot 1.3, but I don't have the 1.3 rom anymore.

There was an odd bug in the interface shell system that causes the problem
you have seen. There are new versions of the TimeTable products that have
been released lately with the bug fixes (latest versions went to C= fryday)
These disks have the UK version of the database as well as the US version
(difference is in spelling and voice overs, the brits dont like what we
americans have done to their language <g>).
Send in your registration w/a problem report (mention my name & cis for
brownie points <g>). I believe there is an update available. Worst case we
could send folks like you a floppy with the executable (or maybe i could
upload it if demand is high). Registering the product will get you info on
updates and new products (TimeTable of Arts and Entertainment).
There is not an update for Grolier executable at present. We are currently
developing the next version, which has new features, faster database, etc.
This version should be shipping by late summer.

problem report like you suggested. By the way, I've just joined the CDRom
forum so I'll be dropping in there from time to time.

Well I am having a problem reading the Hypermedia CD ROM disk and maybe
someone can help me. I just bought a CD-ROM drive and the Fred Fish Disk
and want to put it online for my users to download. Now comes the problem.
I am running the bbs on an IBM clone machine (the only good use for a PC, I
don't want to waste a good Amiga on a bbs). Well I can look at the disk,
read the files and such but when I try to CD to a directory that the name
is more than 8 characters it gives me an invalid directory error message.
I really need to get this working as I would love to have the fish disk
available for my users. As an example, there is a directory on the disk
called LZH_FILES and MessyDos sees it as LZH_FILE. Well I try to CD
LZH_FILE and it comes back with "Invalid directory". This is the only
directory I really need to get into. Any help on this would be greatly
appreciated.

What Fred Fish disc do you have? The one from Hypermedia that is made
specially for BBSes is probably the one you need. I believe it's file names
and/or directory names are all less than 8 characters long.

Thanks for the reply. I talked to someone last night and they told me I
had to get the 1.3 or 1.4 disk for bbses and that will fix my problem.
