#Hard Drive info Wanted
8 messages in this thread
Ok, here goes with the big hardware question! I have an A500, currently
using 1 meg RAM, to be expanded soon. I am also looking to buy a hard
drive, and want to avoid spending a fortune. I have seen the various HD's
which allow one to add memory via the drive. Can anyone give me a
recommendation as to a good unit that sells for a reasonable price? Thanks
very much, Randy
The Trumpcard Grand Slam is the way to go. SCSI interface, hard disk, and
memory board built in. It's relatively good on price-performance, and
nobody provides service like IVS>
Robert, thanks for the info,
Randy
not to mention the Grand Slam also has a extra printer interface which
frees up the Amiga parallel port for a Digiview or sound digitizer. IVS
TrumpCard controllers are great – they eat drives for lunch! I've yet to
encounter a controller which works perfect with such a wide variety of
drives from different makers.
Randall,
Myself, for a A500, I recommend GVP Series II HD package. I have a Quantum
52 MEG with 3 MEGS RAM. Had the unit for over a year now with not one bit
of problem. I'm sure you must have seen the ads in the magazines. Can take
up to 8 MEGS RAM, has a cooling fan, it's own power supply, external SCSI
connector. BTW you can put in a different drive if you want. You don't have
to settle on just the Quantum 52 MEG unit.
BTW…watch in the next couple of months – I was told from GVP
sales/marketing, two months – that their NEW A530 Accelerator product will
be shipping for the A500. In the same looking case as the existing
harddrive, you have 68040, up to 8 MEGS RAM, SCSI controller, Mini Slot,
external SCSI connector. I'm pretty sure you will be able to also mount
your harddrive in the same case (since its got a SCSI controller), why not.
Of course if you wanted IBM capability you can plug in their NEW 286 board
in the Mini Slot.
Alan, thanks much for the info. Sounds like quite a package, but cost is a
definite factor here. How much might all that run?
Randy
Randall,
No idea on cost. GVP sales/marketing did say that owners of existing A500
Series II HD will be taken care of thru upgrade offers. What ever that is?
Sorry couldn't be much more help – that's all I know at this point in time.
Alan, ok, thanks much for the info!
