I got your message. Thanks! I'll give Gary a call today. Once I've got my
tape backup working, look for a verbal tongue-lashing of TTR Development in
one of the Amiga magazines.
TTR DEVELOPMENT IS UNEQUIVOCALLY THE WORST COMPANY I'VE EVER DEALT WITH,

Pardon me for butting in here, but as a new Amiga-3000 user, I was
wondering how the folks on the Forum think of the HDBackup utility that
came with the 3000. It seems more people use other commercial backup
programs.. why is that?

I'd like to know the same thing. I asked about it a couple of weeks ago
and just got a vague "I've had a lot of problems with it. Get QB." If it
is such an unreliable program why is it being distributed without warnings?

Because it SUCKS. I backed a 20 meg DH0: partition with it because I
heard the version of QarterBack I had was buggy with 2.04. I then
reformated the drive. Well, when I tried to restore the first thing I
noticed was that disk one of my backup had read write errors. So I guess
HDBackup dosen't verify the disks. Second it only kept a record of what was
backed up on that first disk. (QuarterBack keeps a record on both the first
and last disk.) So even though all the other disks might of still been good
they were useless without disk one. Third with compression on it took 23
disks to backup my partition. QuarterBack only wanted 17 disks without
using compression. Three strikes your out. As for why they the bothered
putting on the disk, I don't know. It's worthless. Throw it away.

I had a similar problem with HDBackup only my restore got to disk 13 before
it crapped out. So I was stuck with a formatted HD and now way to restore
it. (Oh joy) And as you said there is no way to get the info from disks
after the bad one. I am now using QuarterBack also.

Don't apologize. You're not butting in. You're simply joining the thread.
I just upgraded tp 2.04 last week and am currently reading the large
manual. I just finished ch.5 and I haven't reached the section on HDBackup
yet, so I haven't used it. I believe it's in ch. 6.
2.04 was just recently released. Before that, CBM didn't make a HD backup
program, so users had to use third party products. If HDBackup is any good,
maybe people will use it. However, since it comes with the system software
it probably won't be as good as the third party products. I won't know
until I try it.
