#caddies
9 messages in this thread
I am looking for a source of cd caddies and I thought I had seen a message
that someone had them available for $6.00 each. Could the someone repost
that info if possible, and does anyone know if they work with NEC drives?
A friend has a Toshiba drive and my NEC won't accept his caddies. Is this a
common problem?
Bil, there's some info on caddys in LASER3.TXT in Lib #4 along with prices
and phone numbers (not maintained regularly; however, it's a start). If
you find out more current info or sources, please let me know. I think
there are only 2 _common_ caddy styles, Sony's and (natch) yours. Tandy
has a drive that doesn't use a caddy at all, but for a data diskette…
Kevin–
Someone told me that the NEC drives used a different caddy than the Sony,
but I just received a NEC 83M (haven't installed it yet) and the caddy is
exactly the same. Possibly older NEC's used a different caddy?

The only people I know of that use a different caddy is LMSI (Phillips).
Could be! I've not seen any of the Phillips or other caddies; it's tough
enough finding the Sony-style.
Oops, I missed BEP's message #19279 that gives you far more info.
Yes, I just received BEP's catalog in the mail and they indicate that there
are actually 3 different styles of caddies – Phillips, NEC CDR-77/80, and
all others (e.g. Sony, Hitachi, Denon, Toshiba, and new NEC drives).
Glad to see that there is some kind of standard developing for caddies,
although a caddy-less drive would be nice.

I understand Tandy has one, but I'd worry about all the handling of the
disk. Unlike a music CD, which is pretty tolerant of dirt and scratches,
CDROMs can get worthless real quick with just a little nick. 'Course if
you own a batch of CDROMs and want caddies for them all, you can get a
stabbing pain in the left rear pocket real quick. At least there are
choices; if I could have it all, I'd vote for two or three jukebox drives.
Then I'd never have to touch a CDROM again!
Bill,
If your NEC caddies don't work with a Toshiba drive, then you may have an
older drive, as the new drive's caddies are universal. If your NEC is a
model 80 or 77, you use the older caddies (where the metal slide splits in
two, instead of sliding to one side). I doubt any CD-ROM vendors have
caddies for that drive, you will have to call NEC (800-366-3632) to see if
they can help you find a source.
