NEC M series

I purchased NEC 83M from Computer Discount Warehouse for $518. Their
number is (800) 326-4239, ask for Don Trunnel.

If that price was with the controller, that is a great price. I will give
them a call!

Price for NEC 83M from CDW is _without_ controller. I believe they sell
the interface kit, which includes controller, driver software, cable and
earphones, for $98.

I called yesterday, and was quoted a price of $498 for drive only. The
controller was an extra $98.
Obviously price has not stabilized yet. Hope I didn't mislead you about
price including controller, but I have an Adaptec and don't need another
SCSI controller.

I wasn't mislead, and went ahead and ordered the drive and interface kit,
since it includes not only the controller, but cables and drivers as well.
I've been using a Sony 7205, but wanted to get a faster, MPC compatible
drive, and what I've read about the NEC seems pretty complimentary. I also
want to get the PAS 16 sound card, and understand the 83M will be offered
as an MPC upgrade kit with the sound card, or if you already own the 83M,
they'll offer the PAS 16 with several optical disks and drivers, etc. as an
upgrade option.
The only problem I experienced with the NEC 83M and PAS (old version) is
the lack of a cable for the audio out on the drive to the PAS card. NEC
uses a different 3 prong connector on the drive. Only way I could get the
audio cable was to purchase the "NEC Internal Cable Driver Kit" from Media
Vision. This kit also includes the SCSI cable and driver software.
I understand Sony's new double spindle speed drive has a 256K buffer as
opposed to NEC's 64K buffer. Don't know how much difference this will make
in bottom line performance.
