I appreciate your experience and I may have to make a move based on (I
gather) getting a CD-ROM with the 3DS 2.0 upgrade.
But I read in PC Magazine about the new NEC CDR-73M (external) and
CDR-83M (internal). They claim that it has a throughput rate of 300
Kilobytes (or twice the MPC spec). They also claim a spin rate of 150
sectors per second which is twice the apparent 75 sectors per second
standard (but it will run at 75 if required for audio playback). While the
article did not include the Texel America drive, the NEC did beat out the
others by a good margin in the kilobytes per second rating.
Since I own a NEC Multisync Plus, I should stick with NEC, right <g>?
Anyway, I guess one question would be: If you decided NEC (or another
drive) was better, would you switch? Or is that just another dumb
question? Any comments at all?
Texel showed a 2x speed drive at the CD-ROM conf. in SF this week. You
might call them and ask when it'll be shipping.
Is the NEC drive shipping?

I really hate it when I mess up the reply message number but my eyes
seem to be magnetically drawn to the reference number rather than the
current message number <ugh-g>. You seem to have noticed it was for you
anyway.
I do not know if the NEC is shipping but I will call Texel for some info.
Thanks. I would not be surprised if it is not yet shipping. On the other
hand, I thought that PC Magazine only looked at products that are shipping.
I am waiting <im>patiently for 3DS 2.0 and am wondering if I should
spring for a Weitek. Perhaps you could save me some money. I have a
486-25 and am wondering if I should get a 4167 or is it just as well to get
a 3167 (I hope the model numbers are correct). Or is that not an option? I
thought that a message here indicated that the installation does not know
the difference between the two, or is that wrong? Thanks again.
The only Weitek coprocessor you can put on a 486/25 is a 4167/25. It will
speed up the redraws in the keyframer a bit, and it'll speed up the
renderer a full 30%. If you do alot of animation, the 30% speed boost is
worth it.
You don't have long to wait for r2… I'm pretty confident that we're
going to ship before the end of this month.

Gary, Media Vision is going to ship MPC upgrade kits with the NEC drive
around Easter.

Are you going to upgrade your PAS to a PAS16 for the $120. upgrade fee?
What a deal, and you get to keep the original PAS.
BTW, do you know if they participate over in the Multimedia Vendors forum? I
need to ask them if the upgrade applies to dealer boards, also.
