I need somMy modem came with amigaterm telecom. software. i have set my
computer to compuserve, but i cannot download information. I recently purchased
a 2.1 dos upgrade for my computer. But the manuals and the software do not
seem to compare to the demo i saw. Could anybody suggest what i could do? The
manuals I have are vague and I do not know what to do./EXIT
Are you talking about the 2.1 manuals? Except for the serial prefs
editor in your prefs drawer, they don't really make a difference with
your downloads. First, make sure your protocol in your Amigaterm program,
matches the one you choose from the menu when you download. These need to
be the same so your Amiga and CIS are talking the same language. Usually
on Compuserve CIS-B and Quick-B are used, since they are Compuserve
protocols.

RICHARD: Thank you for your response. I just recently found out today 27 Feb.
1993 that the demo I saw was different. The salesman told me to get the same
program as the demo required a hard drive. Also some of the software was
public domain. Also since I installed my upgrade kit my amigaterm software has
to be rebooted at least three times before my settings come up. I will however
make the adjustments in my modem settings, and will try to get Autopilot 1.03a.

Make sure you have AmigaTerm set up for 8 bits, No parity, 1 stop bit
(8-N-1). This may be contrary to the manual… but it is correct!
If you have a hard drive and a couple megs of RAM, get Autopilot 1.03a
here in the Amiga file libraries. It is a shareware terminal program
designed to make Compuserve easier to use and will save you money on line
by letting you choose files and messages off line.
Ron: I am new to working with the Amiga,and as of yet have to get a hard
drive. Currently I only have 1 meg ram, but that will change. Thank You Thomas
Thomas: Just wait until you get a bit more RAM. Even 1 more meg will make
a big difference on your system. I'd go first for the hard drive, though.
Meanwhile, consider: How much could you get done in today's computing
environment with a 1-meg MS-DOS machine without a hard drive? A lot less
than your Amiga can accomplish, believe me! Build that system up, and
it'll take good care of you.
RON: I LIKE MY AMIGA. IF I COULD GET A DECENT 486 SYSTEM, I WOULD CHANGE IN A
SECOND. BUT FOR RIGHT NOW,I WILL HAVE TO SETTLE WITH MY AMIGA. THANKS THOMAS
The Amiga has 486 based emulators at about the same cost of a new system.
With the money you would spend on a PC system, put into your Amiga… You
will be able to do alot more with it.

First of all, the AmigaTerm software tells you to connect at 7E1, but for
downloads you have to have 8N1. The software manual is in error. I think
you will be able to download if you just correct that one item.
Once you are able to download, your first task should be to get a newer,
better software package. For use on CompuServe, you really should look
into AutoPilot, Library 9 of AmigaVendor. What you get there is a working
demo of a commercial program, but it will automate all of your Compuserve
work. You can set it to do what you want done, such as collecting
messages, email, and downloading or uploading files, and then it will sign
you on, do all the things you had set it to do, and will sign you off.
You do all the reading and typing offline, at no cost. Then, when you
sign on again, it will upload your replies to the right place on
CompuServe and will download any new messages – or software, if you have
marked software to be downloaded. It will save you lots of money because
it does the online work so very quickly. You should know, however, that
AutoPilot is a commercial program and that you have to pay to register it
and get the full version. The demo in AmigaVendor does work, but many of
its nicest features are not available until you register, and it will only
work in the Amigaforums until you register. That is still enough to let
you see how helpful it really is.
Some good terminal programs you might like are in Library 5 of AmigaUser.
A few favorites are BACKTALK, NCOMM, TERM, and JRCOMM.
But first, set your serial settings to 8 bits, No parity, 1 stop bit, and
try downloading. I would also suggest that you try this out in PRACTICE
FORUM. There are no connect time charges in PRACTICE, so it won't be
costing you while you work out the problem. Once you have it mastered
over there, everything will work the same way in all of the other forums
and you can come back here feeling much more confident.
