Mark, More than likely, you'll have to set Term to strip the 8th bit of incoming data. Just go to the "settings" menu, select "serial" and then click on the "Strip bit 8" gadget. Notice that this only sets the global default state. If you use the phonebook, then you can set up the entire environment differently for each phonebook entry. In this case, when you click on a phonebook entry, you just click on the corresponding setting you want to define for that entry. If you use the phonebook to call CIS and don't change the "strip bit 8" setting for it in the phonebook, then you'll see garbage again! You can also tell CIS to use 8 bit data when talking to you. Unfortunately, it doesn't know its you till you've given it your UID, so you still see garbage at the logon prompt. Once you're recognized by the system, it adjusts its output to you accordingly. The accelerated version of Term is for '030s and up processors, so it wouldn't work with the '020 in the 1200. I've always used ANSI/VT102 emulation when calling CIS with Term (which is very rarely since I normally use AutoPilot); you can 'go default' and set CIS up to work with it just fine. You've probably seen this many times, but you really ought to check out AutoPilot. It will save you big money over the long haul. In addition, it makes CIS about 10 times easier to use.
