Well, there's this book out called DENNY ATKIN'S BEST AMIGA TIPS AND
SECRETS that has a whole chapter on stuff like what you need to look for
when buying a monitor. I know the author pretty well. (grin)
Seriously, though, the choices I'm familiar with:
Mitsubishi Diamondscan 1381/1391 — great, but out of production
and difficult to find
IDEK — Mixed responses, they have a 17" for $999
Panasonic — one of their 13xx series scans down to 15kHz, and
is available for under $400; probably the best deal.
Commodore 1960 — I've got one and I'm very happy with it; a bit
expensive, though.

Thanks for the Monitor recommends, considering my limited resources after
actually buying the A1200HD and holding back some $$$ in order to get one
of the GVP 1230 turbo+'s when they become available, the Panasonic 13xx
series looks like I maybe able to swing it.
Well, thats about the third time you have given me advice in the last 2
weeks, since I decided to get the A1200, I guess its time to actually
purchase your book, its the least I could do <G>.

I checked my references, and it's the Panasonic C1391 that scans from 15.5
to 36KHz. Don't forget you'll need Commodore's 23-15 pin VGA adaptor as
well, which should be available from your dealer for about $15.

Peter just sent me a message and said he was having trouble with his
Panasync C1391, and also, I tried to locate one locally today with no
luck, it isn't even in any of the catalogs that the computer stores can
order monitors from. In fact, of 3 stores that I got to actually spend
some time looking in their catalogs/price lists, they couln't find a
single mulitsynch that goes down to 15khz that is in the list in the
library here, except for a sony which I was quoted almost $900.00 for. I
got a quote locally on the 1960 of $499.00, I may have to go that route,
not that that is necessarily bad, I just like to make comparisions when i
spend that kind of money <G>.

I bought a Princeton Graphic Ultra 1600 multi-sync that syncs down to
15kHZ, can overscan to the screen edges with a push of a button, all panel
controls are front-mounted, and I bought it fairly cheap, $450. The Ultra
1400 is a 14" monitor and it was selling for around $350 from DAMARK
mailorder. I believe this item is out of stock with them now, but it
wouldn't hurt to call them and/or call

Thanks Chris,
Where did you get the Ultra 1600 for $450.00??? I called Ultimate Display
Solutions and they quoted me $725.00 for the 1600 and $525.00 for the
1400. I haven't been able to get thru to Damark yet, nobody is answering
the 800 number you gave me.

I bought the Ultra 1600 from DAMARK mailorder for $599, then a month later
they reduced the price to $450. I called 'em up told them I was on the
Preferred Buyer List and they credited my credit card $150! I don't know
if they still stock the monitor or not, but I feel if you can get one
around that price you should move quickly and do it.
I'm pretty sure that 800 number is correct, but you could call 800
Information and ask for DAMARK's 800 number.

Speaking of the topic at hand, I hooked an Epson 17" monitor to my A4000
today for the heck of it. MAN, I wish that puppy would scan down to 15…
It was wonderful. Makes me want to consider the IDEK…

I was at the local CompUSA last week, and saw a 21" Sony monitor hooked up
to a Mac Quadra. Oooh, the display was beautiful! Sharp as a tack, too.
When I win the Lotto I'll definitely buy one.

What was the first thing that intrigued you about the 17" monitor?
Can you use a smaller system font, do graphics look worse because the
pixels are bigger and blockier?

Well, I guess it was that size DOES matter. (grin) Yep, you could use
Topaz 8 instead of Topaz 11 in 640×480 mode, for instance. But I
personally just thought it was more comfortable to have everything larger.
I used to have almost 20/10 vision and now it's down to 20/20, and I
wonder if it's staring at computer screens for the past 12 years that has
done that. (Could just be age I spose. 🙂 The larger text was just more
comfortable to read.
I really don't think the graphics looked any worse; 17" isn't quite as
drastic a jump as 19". Sure, 320×200 pixels are more noticeable, but you
also tend to get more "into" games and such with the larger monitor so you
don't notice the pixels because you're not staring at a computer screen,
darnit, you're blasting Kilrathi scum! 🙂

It's coming…. I gave the copy to our books dept. to mail out, and they
tend to only do mailings once a week. You should see it early next week, I
think.
IDEK is a VERY good monitor.
