Just some info needed please. I am wanting to purchase a new A1200 and a good monitor to view all screen modes without the flicker I have on my 1084s and my A500. Also, what other hardware such as harddrives, memory expansion would be good. I am interested in graphics,animation,3d,music with clarity. Don,t have the money for an A400 but would like to get as close as possible. If anyone can shed some light and info my way it would sinceraly be appreciated. If any programs/hardware needed for 3d,anim or the like if you can supply info thanks in advance. also have A500 for sale if interested. goodbye 500 Mark T Davis

Mark, Commodore's 1950 is a good, albiet expensive, monitor that supports all the Amiga's screen modes. There's a Panasonic model (could someone who knows give Mark the product number?) that works as well. You'll want to add some Fast RAM to the machine, as almost doubles the speed. Options include: Microbotics MBX 1200z: Fast RAM, 68881 math coprocessor, clock GVP accelerator: 40MHz 68EC030, Fast RAM, math coprocessor socket GVP RAM/SCSI board

According to the monitor list that was posted to Amiga User, that monitor is the Panasonic Panasync C1391. I haven't found anyone who carries it- or at least lists it in their catalogs. Jim

Jim, Check Computer Shopper… I've seen it there recently. I believe that USA*Flex is still carrying it; they advertise in Shopper and PC Magazine. I think that Computability may have it as well.

Denny, I'll take another look, but so far it seems like the 1960 is the best choice. I've found exactly 3 of the monitors on that list in the various distributors catalogs we have at the store. Those were the high end ones too. One guy had the 15" IDEK, but dealer cost was more than our retail price on the 1960. Jim

Jim, I'm quite happy with my 1960. I've got that and a Diamondscan, but I use the 1960 because the auto/manual V-Size control makes it so easy to swap between Super72 and normal modes without fiddling with screen sizes. IMHO, the _only_ thing about the 1960 that's a negative is the price. If Commodore want to retail the monitor at $715, they should have Sony doing the tube… And it should be able to handle non-interlaced 1024×768 on a PeeCee (I think it only does interlaced).

Denny, I've been happy with the 1960's I've seen as well. Speaking of the Super72 modes, we just got a patch from Commodore today that is supposed to make that mode work better on the 1960. I was too busy to try it out. When I last used Super72, the very right edge of the screen looked like it had looped around backwards inside the CRT. This patch is supposed to fix that. The old 1950 didn't have the problem. What does a monitor need to do to handle 1024 x 768 non-interlaced? Jim

Jim, "What does a monitor need to do to handle 1024 x 768 non-interlaced?" It needs to be able to scan horizontally at around 49 kHz (assuming a vertical scan rate of 60 Hz). I don't know for sure, but I imagine the 1960 maxes out at 36 kHz or so. That's good enough for 1024×768 interlaced, though, if the monitor can scan vertically at 90 Hz. -Dave (via AutoPilot)

Dave, Thanks for the info. Sounds to me like there's a need for a "Choosing an Amiga monitor" article for one of the magazines. Jim

Jim, I think 1024×768 NI support has to do with scan rates supported. You said you got a patch from Commodore today; was this the new set of Monitor icons for 3.0? They said at DevCon that dealers would be getting that; I hope it's out, as it will solve folks' problems with the image not filling the screen.

Denny, Yes, there was a new set of monitor icons and a new overscan one as well. I noticed a new setpatch in there too. These are supposed to be early versions of 3.1 stuff. I'll have to try them out Monday. Jim

3.1? New setpatch? Given that my 1200 will (finally!) be showing up in the next couple of days, what's up with this? Brian — Cruising on AutoPilot…..

At the store, we recieved an update disk from Commodore for AmigaDOS 3.0. It was supposed to fix some problems with the Super72 modes with 1960 monitors. It's an early release of some stuff that's supposed to be in the 3.1 update whenver it's ready. While looking at the disk, I noticed it had a new setpatch. There wasn't anything on there that described what was actually being fixed. Jim

Get as LARGE a HD as you can afford if you plan to do Animations. I've got 105 meg Static HD and a 88 meg Removeable Sysquest HD and still run out of room often. It seems your projects expand to fill all available space and RAM. I've got Anims that are 10.5 megs in size for example and are PART of a LARGER Sequence.

I have a 426 meg harddrive and I still run out of room. Toaster might be responsible fot that, or at least 24 bit files. It's never big enough…. –Paul
