I'm about to invest in a network for my office. We currently have 5 machines
and will be adding 2-3 more at the same time and many more in the not too
distant future.
What is the most preferred network? (novell, lantastic, Unix [for you greg])
Obviously a server is needed for a growing network. Does it have to have the
fastest processor available or just a fast hard disk system?

Steve, I just installed the beginning of a Lantastic. Pretty cheap. I can get
the parts for you if you want. Give me some specs…I won't add too much.

Why did you choose Lantastic over Novell? (trying to learn as much about these
things as possible)

1) CHEAP! 2) Easier to install and support.

Remote control is OK as long as you don't change the channels all day…<g> (I
want a Sun server like Greg's!)

I have a 3 user Lantastic network and love it's ease-of-use, simplicity, low
memory overhead, speed etc. I think I will go with a dedicated server soon. The
fastest server would probably be a 486/50 EISA with an EISA scsi caching
controller with about 2mb – 4mb RAM cache. See PC Sources Feb 1993 for Buyers
Guide of 486/50 Eisa systems – Comtrade 486 Eisa Dream Machine was their
favourite. The fastest controller seemed to be the DTC3290HD and the fastest
hard drive a Fujitsu FJ2624s 520mb with a 12m/sec av. access time.
