#making small runs of cds

I'm interested in what's involved in producing a small run of a few hundred
CDROMs containing a dataset of a few hundred Meg. Where do I find companies
that will do this (especially in San Diego area), what is the typical cost,
etc. I had heard it was possible to have CDROMs made for about $3000 + about
$3-$5/CDROM. I'm a software developer and this is new area for me. Any advice
would be greatly appreciated.

Most CD mass replicators will require you to make at least 500 discs of any one
"title" but the good news is that the prices you quoted are rather high.

If I have an existing (govt public domain) CD or data on PC hard disk, what
is the process and cost to generate final stack of CD's. Would a few DC2120
tapes be a reasonable way of sending data to duplicating shop?

I'll be happy to send you the info — it will be on its way before the weekend.
500 discs does seem like a lot, but it is a manufacturing process, and an
entire line has to be set up for each title. You can always give away extras
as demos, or make clocks out of them, or use them as coasters…. <g>. I'll
ask if it is possible to get smaller runs, but the info I have right now is
that 500 is the minimum. That's for ROMs, BTW; audio CDs have a 1000 minimum,
I think (but that's not the area I'm in, so don't quote me, please!)
The tapes are indeed a reasonable delivery medium for replication. You need
premastering first, though, and that's one of the things we do.

Sorry about butting in here. Did I read your message right that you've got a
500 min. order for CD-ROMs at the duplication house? I'm sure I misunderstood
as that isn't true. Perhaps my entering the middle of this thread I missed

You're right. I was using obsolete figures (from about 3 years ago). The
current minimum number of CD-ROMs DMI will press is 200, not 500. Thanks for
catching that.

So you've got a 200 min. order? That can still make for a _lot_ of CD-R's for
small orders. We don't have that min. order. I'm surprised those are still
used.

"We" is the manufacturing house where CD Solutions sends our small to med.
sized orders. There is no min. order quantity.
