I understand your point. But…a CD-I now retails for $589.00 including Compton's Multimedia Encyclopedia or your choice of 3 other titles. Plus you get a coupon for a free Photo-CD. I agree that the average consumer won't buy the unit–but Phillips is NOT targeting them. A basic principle in marketing is know as 'skimming'–getting the early adopters and innovators–others will then follow. This process takes a while. In this case of CD-ROM devices, it could be a few more years. BTW–CD-I is doing quite well internationally–latest figures from New Media magazine state 15,000 units a month. The future is very bright for CD-I. Could have been for CDTV too if it had a better display and some marketing.

John, CDTV is heavily marketed in Europe. And from what I hear from industry folks over there, has about 4 times the installed base in the UK. CD-I's going to keep trickling, IMHO, until 3DO units start to hit the market, at which time it will disappear :poof:.
