#CD-ROM cache questions

Samuel, I recently purchased PCKwic versin 4.x. It, in fact, does cache my NEC CD-ROM connected to my PAS-16. The company has upgraded to version 5.0 and I have in enroute to me at this time. Tom

Tom, I would suggest you contact PCKWIK for their response to CDROM caching. PCKWIK does not support any CDROM caching even in version 5.0. They do however work very well in conjunction with CD Speedway. Reese. PS. If you are referring to the Windows User review of Speedcache where they tested PCKWIK vs. Speedcache and found PCKWIK faster on CDROM's you have to know where Speedcache stands in the performance realm.

Also – do you know anything about the new lightning with CD cache? Thanks in advance RK

Well, The two work together by caching the CDROM files to hard disk and then using PCKWIK to cache the hard drive. For most users, having enough RAM to build a decent size RAMdisk is difficult. For me, even 2-3 Meg. is more than I want to give to cache CDROM files. However, by caching the CDROM files to the hard disk (improving the medium's transfer performance) and then using a good delayed write cache (KWIK version 5.0 or above), you will get real close to the performance acheived by having as much as a 16 Meg. RAMdisk. Check my configuration file available in the LIB for more information on Speedway with Hard disk caches. Reese.

Thanks for the correction, Reese. Gee… So, your saying that CD-Speedway *will* work in conjunction with other cache programs? I'm thinking of not only PCKwik, but Qcache (386Max). Tom

Yep. The only hesitation I make is that there are a lot of hard disk caches that are tough to recommend. QCache is PCKwik BTW. Reese.
