#Dbl Speed Toshiba 3104
7 messages in this thread
I know that this question has probably been asked 16 billion times, but I
haven't seen it specifically yet. The question is, what do I really need to
hook the double speed Toshiba CD-ROM to my system? I have asked the question 3
times and have received (yep, you guessed it), 3 different answers.
1. A friend said I would need a $250 SCSI-2 interface. (a mail order
company said the same) 2. The above mail order company also said that a Pro
Audio Spectrum 16
would also work. (which is $189…?!?!) 3. A different mail order company
claims that a $120 controller will work.
I have a Sound Blaster Pro, but the person I talked to at Creative Labs said I
could only attach their CD to the SBPro. (no thanks)
What can I do for the least amount of cash without sacrificing performance?
THANKS!
The Toshiba 3401 is a SCSI-2 which will work with any SCSI controller,
including real inexpensive 8-bit SCSI cards as long as you have the proper
CD-ROM drivers. What will work and won't work on your CD-ROM is dependent on
the Hardware, controller and CD-ROM reader as well as the software drivers.
Both are equally important.
OK, thanks! It's always nice to save some $$$. It's safe to assume there are
plenty of drivers for the Toshiba, right?
So I'm looking at $490 for the drive and $120 for the interface – just over
$600. Not too bad for the best one, eh?
I recently saw an ad for the double speed Toshiba for $399. Does that sound
suspicious or are they really getting that cheap?

Where?
Nill
I'd say that's either a really cheap price for the internal version of the 3401
or it's probably a price for the 3301, the older version, 325ms 150kb CD-ROM
reader.
You can always buy a Trantor T130 SCSI card complete with the SCSIworks!
package that supports the Toshiba 3401 drive. It lists complete with the
software package for $99.
I just put a 3104 into my PC and the difference over the Creative MMUK is
really astounding. This sucker is fast!!!!!!!!
