I think I agree, but it's not just the P5 delay that's the
problem–they only showed them on the Pentium (wonder if anybody will
actually use that name?) because they could and it made things look
even better. Indeed, most folks won't get a P5 until they have to
upgrade, probably in 2-3 years after it's introduced.
The only time I've seen AVI files run smoothly and seamlessly was
when they were run off a dedicated full motion video card (that also
accepts NTSC and PAL) that was chained off a stock VGA feature card
connector. So, it's two boards, two slots, and if you want the best
high resolution graphics for your regular apps you can't use it
because those cards don't have feature connectors and you'll have to
be happy with 640X480 for just about everything. Implication 2:
you'll need a second system dedicated to full motion video networked
to your first and primary computer that you use for real work.
Hmmm…. Maybe that's what Video for Windows is for….
So, a few thousand bucks for a fully dedicated system and you're MPC
super-ready!

What you are saying about a dedicated machine makes a lot of sense. Maybe,
as the computer market becomes more vertical, dedicated machines will be the
way to go. Just a few years ago we were paying up to 10k for Top-of-the-Line
machines. So, why not 2 or 3 dedicated machines for the same price. With
dedicated machines compatability would be a non-issue.
As a former shade tree mechanic turned computer hobbiest I see another hobby
becoming so technical and costly that it loses its enjoyment as a pastime. It
is still fun trying to get things to work properly and as long as they stick
with the IBM/DOS/WINDOWS format I'll have plenty to keep me busy.
The basic purpose of my computer is as a tool for me to do my job. All else
must be secondary.
