Dear Betty,
Well, everything went pretty well following you instructions with the exception
of the "ASSIGN" instruction. Autopilot is now on my hard drive in the "more"
drawer. I can access it and read the docs but I can't print the docs and I
think I screwed up somehow. Or did I? Would love to get it up and running but
am not sure how. Should there be an icon for it? Can I "re-ASSIGN" it? Should I
bother? Hmmmmm.

If you can run AutoPilot by using the Shell and typing AP:AUTOPILOT, then
your assign statement is OK>
To type the docs, CD to the directory where they are and then type the
command to print them out.

Dear Betty,
I can't run the program with the AP:Autopilot Command. I get a requester asking
me to insert AP in any drive so I must have Screwed up. Also, there's no icon
and I think there should be. Am going to try and re-install on the hardrive
again and see what happens. I feel like a complete dummy since your
instructions are always right on the money.

I doubt that you need to reinstall. You probably only need to change the
ASSIGN statement in your User-Startup sequence.
Edit the User-Startup with your favorite editor. For little jobs like
this, I usually just use ED, which comes with the system:
Run ED S:User-Startup
Then, look down through there until you find your ASSIGN statement for
AP:. Make sure it gives the complete path to AP: For instance, if your
program is on a disk named WORK: and in a directory called AP:, you would
make the ASSIGN statment say:
ASSIGN AP: WORK:AP
You need to be sure your ASSIGN statement is working before you register
the program, because if you cannot run AutoPilot with just AP:AUTOPILOT,
then your magic email message won't be able to find AutoPilot to turn it
into a registered version.

Thanks again! I'll try to reassign. When I've "ED S:User-Startup" it goes to a
blank page but that's probably o.k. since I have nothing on my hard drive right
now EXCEPT the system and auto- pilot (had a lot of trouble with my hd last
year [sleazy dealer who's no longer a dealer]). Will probably bring it into my
new dealer (unsleazy) for extra memory sometime soon. Let's hope this does the
trick. My CIS bill will probably look like the national debt by the time I'm
done.

If you don't have a User-startup yet, this ASSIGN may be the only thing
there for a while, but you'll be putting other things in as time goes by.
Any changes you make to your startup-sequence need to be made in
User-Startup – not in the Startup=sequence supplied with the system.

Dear Betty,
Whew! As soon as I went to "Show All" I discovered that the icon was there and
ready to roll. Now I can start AutoPilot with either the icon or the CLI. What
a relief! Still having problems with printing the apdocs.prn file so that I can
have a hardcopy of the instructions. My hd is called System2.1. Have tried
PRT:System2.1/ AutoPilot/apdocs.prn. Have tried PRT:System2.1/Utilities/More/
AutoPilot/apdocs.prn. No luck. What am I doing wrong? I'm going to run my
WordPerfect, see if I can retrieve it from the hd and print it that way. Seems
logical but…..?

If you have the ASSIGN statement correct, the following will work:
COPY AP:APDOCS.PRN PRT:
This assumes that you have the following ASSIGN statement in your
USER-STARTUP sequence (or have issued it from the CLI). Remember, if you
add an assign to your startup sequence, it will not take affect until you
reboot (which will re-run the new startup sequence).
ASSIGN AP: System2.1:Autopilot
The above ASSIGN, tells AmigaDos to look for all of the files that
AutoPilot expects to find (in a 'logical device' named AP:) in the actual
directory System2.1:AutoPilot. Do you have a DIRECTORY named AUTOPILOT
in your System2.1 partition? I think where you might be having a problem,
is that you did not put AutoPilot and its related files in to its OWN
DIRECTORY at all, but rather just dumped everything in to your System2.1
partition… is that true? If so, you really should follow the
instructions in the documentation and put all of AutoPilot's files in a
directory… you can name that directory anything you'd like, but
AutoPilot seems to be a pretty appropriate name, don't you agree? <g>
Create a new directory by clicking once anywhere inside the System2.1
window to 'activate it. The hold down the right mouse button and go to the
WorkBench menu and choose NEW DRAWER from the WINDOW menu. Click once on
the new EMPTY drawer, hold down the right mouse button again, and choose
RENAME from the ICON menu… rename EMPTY to AUTOPILOT.
Now, once you have created a DIRECTORY named AutoPilot, copy the AP.LHA
archive in to that directory. Make sure you have LHA in your C: directory,
then Open a CLI shell, and type:
CD System2.1:AutoPilot
LHA -x AP.LHA
Check that the ASSIGN statement above has been added to your USER-STARTUP
file, then reboot.
You should go back through your System2.1 root directory and DELETE any
files that are related to AutoPilot, as they are no longer needed since
all of the files are now in System2.1:AutoPilot.
ALL OF THE ABOVE APPLIES _ONLY_ IF YOU DID NOT PUT AUTOPILOT AND ITS
RELATED FILES IN TO ITS OWN DIRECTORY!!

Thanks. It was in there. Just didn't have an icon until I used the "show all"
command. It runs fine with the cli or clicking the icon. Can't I just dump the
apdocs.prn file and other extraneous files in the trashcan or is it not
recommended when discarding from the hard drive?

I'm not sure what you are asking…. but yes, you can dump stuff in the
trashcan, then EMPTY TRASH to delete… but why would you throw out the
docs?
Well Michael,
As I had a hardcopy of the docs, I didn't think I needed them. Not one
of my smarter decisions but I'm going through nicotine with- drawal
and you wouldn't believe some of the things that make perfect sense
to me. I threw it all in the trash and decided to put off learning
and using AutoPilot until the fireworks that are going off in my head
subside a little. Will probably have to download again but that's how
we learn. For something that supposed to be time and money saving,
AutoPilot is turning out to be neither right now but that's not its
fault. While I've got you on the horn, how's AutoPilot on other
systems? Is it exclusively tailored to CIS or does it work on other
bulletin boards etc.

Those instructions are in the description of the docs file, and I'm sure
you didn't think to save that description. I doubt that I would have,
either.
CD to the directory where your doc file is. Then type:
TYPE >PRT: APDOCS.PRN
This version was written with Word Perfect, but it was printed to disk so
that the table of contents and index would be correct on everyone's
printer, so you cannot read it into your WP with much success.

Thanks again. Actually, after I wrote your note, I thought it through a bit
more and copied the file onto a floppy. then loaded WP and retrieved the file
from the floppy, then printed it. I'm sure this wasn't the easiest way but it
worked with the exception of a few little print errors which I edited out with
WP. Now I have a crisp, clean hardcopy of the AP docs and am ready to go.
Probably won't use it till Saturday after I have some more memory installed in
the System.
I have a "sort of" related question. Is there a listing of New York based
bulletin boards? I love computer games and I have a ton of them, some fairly
recent. I put ads in the Amiga Forums that they were for sale at prices that
were less than any discount catalog prices but nobody responded so I'd like to
check out some bulletin boards and see if I can move them. It seems silly to
continue to store them when there's some kid out there who could really enjoy
them. Any suggestions or lists?

We don't have a list of NY bulletin boards, but I'll bet some of our
members know about some. Also, they might be able to tell you about some
user groups that allow sale of used items at their meetings. It's done
regularly by my club.

Thanks! I had it all along. When I used the "show-all" command there was
Autopilot in it's own little drawer. It runs fine from the icon or the cli. Am
looking forward to using it in the near future.

If you need to use Show All to find the drawer for your Autopilot
directory try copying the icon of a drawer that appears when you have Show
Only Icons chosen in the menu. Try this command in the Shell.
copy sys:System.info sys:Autopilot.info
Insert the correct path info and name of your autopilot drawer as
appropriate for you system.
Remember if you do this the new icon will appear on top of the old one.
You'll then have to move the new icon and then select it and then Snapshot
it from the ICON menu item.

Thanks. I tried something like that then got all messed up and now
I've got zilch. I threw it all in the trashcan. Guess I shouldn't try
this stuff AND try and quit smoking cigarettes at the same time. Will
probably have to download again as I tried to follow the same
procedures and I got a roadblock with the lha program.
I hope the second time is a charm.

"Pride cometh before a fall". Got all messed up and it started
getting weird. It may be my hd. Will have it checked out when I have
the extra memory installed on Sat. Will the CIS police come and get
me if I download the whole business again? Seems like there's only
one demo per download. I'll keep you posted and/or amused.
