Your book arrived, and I have skimmed the TOC and briefly read the
preface. BTW I got the FreeBeer command to work in the CLI, great tip!
Definitely something I didn't know was in the ADOS!
Man, this book has lots of neat tricks in it! I'm just flipping through it
trying to find things I didn't know and I didn't realize that the new ED
text editor had so many extra features! Great tip Denny! Figures, some C=
clown crippled it before it got out the door, with a limp startup config
file.
This book is gonna be fun to read, I can just tell. In fifteen minutes I
have already discovered there are lots of neat tips I can use. Stuff I
never tried, and just plain out didn't know before!
Thanks Denny, this was the best prize I ever (the only too <grin>) won in
a Formal Conference. Best of all it has the author's autograph.

After simple browsing of the book, I think it can sell itself. I enjoyed
the example of using the lformat option within the List command to make
scripts.
I didn't see anything on using a Pipe command. WB2.x does support Pipe
doesn't it?

Yep, WB2.x does support PIPE:. That was in the chapter with the
SEX&FREEBEER command, which will be in the sequel. 🙂

Would it be giving away too much if you told what the FreeBeer command
does? I would have been at the CO but it was the wee hours for us in

Denny… why not get your publisher to let you sell the book via SWREG
here on CIS… you get notification of a purchase, pass it on to the
distributor/publisher, they ship ups to customer, etc?

That would be a great idea, but alas the company's pretty estabilished in
its distribution routines.
Isn't there a bookstore online in the Electronic mall? I bet you could
order it from there…

We poor souls out in the provinces second that idea!! I live 50 miles fron
Denny and bet I can't buy it! I'll try Winston tomorrw…I think they have
books stores <g>.
Gracia… don't forget, as Denny pointed out, Walden Books is online in
the Electronic Mall.
So is Barnes & Noble…they discount <g>.
They also backorder heavily, and ship late… They screwed up a B-Day
present for my dad, and I won't use them again because of it. Personal
decision on my part… not meant to influence you or anyone else.

I talked to the manager at B.Dalton's at the mall in Winston, and he said
he'd order a few copies. The Software Etc. there may have some copies as
well.
Last time I was at Software ect. in Hanes mall it looked like they had taken
out all of the amiga books. I have seen the Amiga version of Compute there once
or twice but not consistantly. The new manager there is a dweeb.

Yup, I just moved down here (from Mt. Airy) in January. I'm originally from
California though so maybe I can get one of you locals to answer a question for
me. What the heck is all this white stuff on the ground? 🙂

The white stuff is put down here by the supreme diety once every three or
four years so we can go out to street corners and watch southerners with
absolutely no sense play bumper cars with their Camaros and Buicks.

of car in case he skid into our pond I could call for help <G>!! I may not
be able to get to Post Office for days…where if I'm lucky, Pp4 is
waiting, only 3 1/2 months late.

Sorry, Denny – I think those people you see bumping their cars around are
Yankees pretending to be Southerners. A real Southerner has sense enough
to stay home for the one or two days every two or three years when the
streets are icy or covered with snow.

Most of this winter we've had to drive on slick, and snow covered roads.
And I only live as far north as Wyoming!

There's just something wonderfully satisfying to me when I hear that a
foot of snow has fallen on a town that doesn't even own a snow plow. It
really makes me wish I lived there, at least during the period of time
where there is no doubt left in anyone's mind that Mother Nature really
can, and will, remind us of our mortality. Regardless of how many
snowplows and salt trucks we may have at our disposal.
Very funny. "Locals" can't help you, they don't know from snow
either…now a New Yorker like moi, that's a different story. My cat
finnally learned what a litter box was for…maybe he won't wake me at 5AM
anymore. I'll send you cmail about local dish.

The local Software ect store in my area is also going to discontinue
selling Amiga Software and probably books. The manager says he can't
compete with a local ( 20 miles away ) dealer and mail order. The shelf
space will be replace with MAC stuff. Always seems like a uphill battle.
I do have to admit they never really stock a GOOD selection of software in
the first place. The good titles never stayed on the shelf very long and
they NEVER replaced them.

Sounds about like the one here. I think they stock Amiga titles based on whats
selling in the IBM world. The get in about 20 copies of each new Sierra game
and then complain that they only sell a couple because of piracy on the Amiga.
Gee, maybe the people that bought them told all there friends that this ported
IBM crap just plain sucks.
Oh, but it gets better. The local Software Ect. got in 2 amiga 600s. Did they
tell anybody? No. Did they put one on display? No. Did they get upset when they
didn't sell? Yep.

They only listed TWO Amiga books on their standard list. But they have a
"special order" option and should be able to get it from there. I left
them a feedback note and asked them if they could start "stocking" the
book and said I'd post here if they did. So hopefully they'll get back to
me on that.

orders direct?

We do sell books direct, yep. There's a file called DENNYBOOK.TXT online
that tells how to order the book.
Or do you mean on CIS? The problem there is that it requires accounting to
handle a new account, a person to check and process those orders, etc. If
we were a smaller company it would be easy to just start doing that.
Anyway, COMPUTE Books is a separate company and I just don't feel they
feel like they have the available resources (read: extra time) to do that
for the amount of sales it would probably generated. (I'm just guessing
knowing them… I will mention it to them.)
Grrrr… Chris… you're making all of us here jealous of you!!! 😉
