#RAM and Animator
11 messages in this thread
Greg,
Regarding the problem of Autodesk Animator Pro not finding the AA.MU file even
though it is in the \ani\resource directory and \ani. You suggested too little
DOS RAM. I checked my machine and I have 502K free before loading ANI or
ANIPLAY. I couldn't find anything in the ANI manuals that said how much free
DOS memory must be available, only that 4MB or better should be there to run
ANI.
Do you know how much DOS RAM is needed for ANI? Is the amount different for
ANIPLAY? Are there any other DOS based FLC players available on the market
that take less? I am interested in having the player available on a Network to
provide some spiffy stuff on login and as we all know, memory is never a
problem when a network is involved!
Thanks,
Dave
The reason you are getting the error, is that you are using emm386, which is
taking all the extended memory away from Ani pro. Take out emm386 and the
error will go away.

A good thought. Unfortunately I am not using the EMM386 driver.
I have himem.sys and smartdrv.sys loaded in config.sys and dos=high. Any other
thoughts? I would really like to be able to use the player here if nothing
else, and the whole ANI program would be really convenient.
Can't find AA.MU indicates too little memory, rather than "too little DOS RAM".
AAPro gets memory from the base 640K, and I have been able to run it in less
than 400k base memory. I haven't experimented with the combinations.
Make sure that you have specified sufficient Expanded memory. You could run
into the problem with the CONFIG.SYS line, Device=c:\DOS\EMM386.
This will supply only a small amount of expanded memory. AAPro, upon seeing
*some* expanded memory will ignore any eXtended memory. Add some number to the
EMM386 line to boost the expanded memory (4096, etc. See the DOS manual.).
If you're using QEMM, then AAPro has a greater likelihood of working with the
default. Watch out for switches on QEMM command line!
How much RAM is on your machine anyway?
Nik
4 MB of RAM. 502K available just prior to trying to load ANI or ANIPLAY.
Just got a note from Yann about EMM too. Am not using EMM.
My config.sys contains only himem.sys and smartdrv.sys. DOS = high.
Try removing smartdrv.sys – maybe it's stealing some of the 4mb from anipro.
Nik,
I'm running 16mb in a 486/33 with AAP.
How much memory will AAP support? Will it benefit me to bring the memory up to
32mb?

Are you working on a version of 3DS for NT?
Dave:
Ani Pro will utilize the same amount of memory as 3D Studio, which is 64Mb.
Greg Pyros
Are you still unable to get AAPro running?
By the way: "Is 3DS going to be made to work on the NT platform?" — Good
question.
Generally, any platform that will guarantee sales of a product will be looked
at. The collector of "wishlist" items, the YOST Group, will see your comment
as a request to see 3DS run on NT. At this point there is no news if this is a
platform that 3DS will be developed on.

David:
Try removing ALL your drivers from config.sys and autoexec.bat and run a
clean system. (oh, alright, you can load the mouse! <g>)
Then delete *.cfg from the \ani directory and run ANI, ANIPLAY, and ANICONV.
Let me know what happens and the exact error message if there is one….
Also, run MEM from the command prompt and let me know what it says…
Good luck,
Greg
Will do. Will not be able to report back very quickly this morning. May be
much later in the day. Thanks!
