Is is possible to create a targa flic on 3ds and then play it back through the
targa card? I have been tring to do it for three weeks and it now appears not
possible, playing back part, that is….

Joe,
You can only render flics in 256-color mode. These can then be played
back on the Targa+ (not the older Targa) with Animator Pro. Sorry, you can't
do playback of flics on the Targa+ through 3D Studio directly. If you do need
files with more colors, you would probably have to render a sequence of .TGA
files, & convert to Mathematica's 16-bit-color .FLX file format and utilize
their player.

Was that the one … for some reason I could swear that there was another name

A .FLC file _by_definition_ is limited to 256 colors so the simple answer to
your question is no. However, I seem to remember someone making a product
anouncement regarding a program which would process and compress 16-bit
sequential TGA's and play them back in real time. After the anouncement, I
haven't heard much traffic regarding it so I can't vouch for its effectiveness.
Has anyone out there heard more about or used this software?

The product is called F-16, and plays back *.FLX files in 16 bit.
I just received a demo of the product, and I was impressed! The files get
VERY large, and they need to totally load up into RAM, RAM-disk, or
disk-cache, and are better with a local bus machine, but I'm sold!
It comes on a CD-ROM with lots of demos and a compiler to put together all
your Targas. I guess you should let 3DS dither them down to 16bit, might
make the overall process faster.
I can't wait to get one!

<has heard>. I have it here. It is the F16-Player/Builder. I have installed it
today and it is the greatest "player" I have seen so far. It truns sequential
TGAs (16 Bit) into 15Bit or 16Bit flics. The quality and speed is amazing. The
player plays from RAM or Disk. And playing from disk is not even that slow.
The F16 Player is approx. $ 300 plus you can order a CD with plenty of examples
for another $ 30. It also includes a script language to play from the prompt.
It is absolutely outstanding. Forget Tempra's FLX. They're not much fun.
