Hi there, everybody.
This is going to seem a little strange, because at this point in time, I don't
have an AMIGA. I am planning on purchasing one in the near future and would
like any suggestions as to the configuration I should purchase. It will be
used for business and pleasure (mostly pleasure). I will need a good (and
inexpensive) CAD program, database system, wordprocessing (you know the usual
things). Any help will be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance, and I hope
to be able to communicate with several of you in the near future. For those of
you who are interested, I am using a C-64 at this point in time.

The short answer Del is get an A1200. This has 2mb of ram as std and is the
latest technology from C=. A hard disk can be fitted inside which of course
will make life much much easier. We in the UK have found that not all hdisks
are suitable so ask your dealer first. Various Cad programs exist from which to
choose. Consider Superbase Professional which has a programming language built
in and is a relational database. This does everything bar the washing up.
Secondly Superbase Personal which is a flatfile database and is more than
adeqate for general usage. Wordprocessing comes in 2 styles Final Copy II which
is a wysywig type and its capabilities are bordering on the DTP side of things.
Wordworth is similar as is Excellence. Also consider Protext a very powerful
program of the Wordperfect type.

Welcome to the Amiga Forums, Del. I'm sure others will offer lots of
suggestions to you for software titles… but based on what (little)
you've said, I'd guess that a new Amiga 1200 would be a great start for
you. For word processing, you'll have lots of choices, among them
ProWrite, Final Copy, excellence!, and several other top notch programs…
be sure to visit an Amiga dealer for demonstrations… and check out the
AmigaVendor Libraries for demos of some of these. For database work, the
best general relational DBMS for the Amiga is SuperBase Pro 4, distributed
by Oxxi… they also have a section in AmigaVendor. CAD is a bit more
difficult, because such systems just aren't inexpensive… maybe someone
else can make a suggestion to you in this area.

Welcome to the Amiga world! I've owned an A2000 for about three years
now and just recently sold it to move into the next generation of Amigas. I
bought an A1200. I haven't been this excited about a computer since I first
had the A2000! The A1200 is truly an amazing piece of equipment. I just got a
hold of a demo from Europe that totally utilizes the new capabilities, and it
is unbelieveable. What can I say, I'm hooked. IMO, this is the way to go.

here until later in the week, according to Safe Harbour.) I'm just

It turned out that Jonathan Schmidt, an associate of mine had already
uploaded it to the Amiga Arts forum. It is called HoisAGA. It wasn't there
yesterday, but it should be there soon. It is also in pal mode FYI. I almost
forgot, it is in the Euro Demos section. Have fun.

I downloaded HoisAGA off of a local BBS a week ago or so. They claim it is
the first AGA EuroDemo but it really didn't show off the AGA graphics that
well. Still fun to play with though.

I don't get it. You saw that demo, and you didn't think it showed off
the graphics that well? It might have been able to do better, but the
transitions and fades are incredible, it is showing off 262,000 colors
when it fades black into blue, with NO lines, and how about the last part,
the fade with the two images is flawless. The showing off might be
subtle, but it would take a VERY expensive IBM to match that demo.
