IS CDTV STILL ALIVE? I'VE HAD A CDTV UNIT FOR OVER A YEAR NOW AND IT
SEEMS THAT WHERE THERE WAS LITTLE INFORMATION ABOUT THE UNIT BEFORE THERE IS
NONE AT ALL NOW. WHEN I BOUGHT THE CDTV THERE WAS ALOT OF PLANS FOR ITS USE,
WHAT HAPPENED? CD-I, PHOTO-CD, AND VIS PLUS ONE OR TWO OTHER FORMATS SEEM TO
BE STILL RUNNING STRONG. I BOUGHT THE CDTV BECAUSE OF IT'S ABILITY TO BE MORE
THAN JUST A INTERATIVE GAME MACHINE. I HAVE IT HOOKED UP TO MY 2000 VIA PARNET
AND I WAS AND STILL AM IMPRESSED BY ITS CAPABILITIES. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY
ANSWERS TO ANY OF THE FOLLOWING?
1. WILL CDTV EVER BE CAPATIBLE WITH PHOTO-CD?
2. WILL CDTV HAVE FULL MOTION CAPABILITIES?
3. IS THERE ANY BOOKS ON CDTV OUT?
4. WHAT GOES IN THE EXPANSION AREA IN BACK?
5. WHAT KIND OF CARDS CAN I GET FOR THE PCMIA LOOKIN SLOT IN FRONT?
6. CAN I ACCESS ANY CDTV PORTS WHILE USING PARNET?
7. AGA,MEGA-CHIP 2000, OR ADSPEED(I'M NOT WORRIED ABOUT VOIDING OUT
THE WARRANTY ANYMORE) EXPANDABILITIES?
I READ AS MUCH ON THE CDTV AS I CAN AND READ A FEW MESSAGES ABOUT
PROGRAMING SOFTWARE TO USE PHOTO-CD ON CIS 3 OR 4 MONTHS AGO. IF ANYONE HAS
ANY OTHER NEW INFO ABOUT CDTV, PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

You must be aware of the new ALIEN CRAFT t.m. geography series, now in demo,
coming soon for CDTV.

3. Most books about the Amiga are also about CDTV 🙂 4. There's a couple
hard drive kits for that port; one from
a Canadian company, the other from a UK company. 5. memory cards. 64K and
256K battery backed up memory cards.
The slot is not PCMCIA. CDTV was finished before the PCMCIA
spec. 7. I know a couple people who've added megachip 2000 to their CDTV.
(BTW, you may want to post in lower case. Upper case is usually
reserved for 'shouting')

My friend owns a CDTV and is very upset with C= about leaving the CDTV users
out in the cold. You said that there are a couple manufactors out there that
have a hard drive for the CDTV. Who are they? Do you have any more details.
Also do you know the difference between PCMCIA and the CDTV memory slot. My
friend was told that a PCMCIA card will actually work it is just the physical
size that is different.
The only memory expansion my friend has is to get the extra 1 meg chip ram for
his fattest Agnus.
If you can help with the specifics or know somebody who can it would be a big
help. C= and their dealers are pretty useless. That is not just limited to
CDTV.

There's something called SCSI-TV by the Commodore Users of Edmonton, in Canada.
I just heard about their board, so its freshest in my mind. I saw an ad for
the UK one in one of the UK Amiga magazines; I'll see if I run across it
again.
The CDTV came out before PCMCIA standard was finalized, and is basically an
earlier design. I don't think a PCMCIA card will work;
Your friend might call Microbotics, and see if their accelerator (with ram)
will work in the CDTV.

Does the CDTV have JEIDIA? That is what is on my Toshiba 2200SX, which
also was released just before the PCMCIA standard was finished. All of
the newer Toshibas have the PCMCIA. There are only two things available
for that slot, so far as I know. There are memory cards in various sizes
from 2M up to 10 or 12M(reasonably priced, I thought), and there is a 2400
baud modem (quite expensive.) I'm curious. Would this Toshiba memory work
in the CDTV slot?

I don't think so; I seem to remember that the JEIDIA standard was the one that
eventually became PCMCIA. (which doesn't mean you can use early jeidia cards
in pcmcia sockets, either 🙁 )

According to the support people on Toshiba Forum, the JEIDIA was the
card that was built upon to develop the PCMCIA. The Toshiba 2200
line has the JEIDIA cards, and the later ones have PCMCIA. Since you
said the CDTV had an earlier format than PCMCIA, I had thought it
might have been the JEIDIA. Does it conform to some other standard,
or is it proprietary?
It's not propriatary as far as I know (C= was just buying them in Japan) but
I've got a feeling its not JEIDIA. Though I could be wrong about it; I
thought JEIDIA had the tuple concept that PCMCIA has (which the CDTV card has
no trace of)
