This is the first time I understood that everything is rendered internally at
24 bits, thanks. Obviously rendering to a targa board is the way to go. BTW do
you know the difference it makes to 3DS to use a 1MB video board vs a 2MB video
board?

Whether the video card has one or two or fifteen megs on board is
immaterial. What makes a difference is the resolution you are rendering to.
If you are running RDPADI as a dual screen system with a 24 bit frame
buffer, the penalty is negligable for letting it display.
However, an RCPADI, even 24 bit, as I understand, should be turned off
(render to null) for speed purposes.
Two megs just gives you a larger screen size at 24 bits. 3DS R2 is
optimized (quality, not speed) for field rendering at 512×486 pixels.

Thanks for explaining that to me. Are you saying that when using RCPADI and 8
bit color you would best do this to null? I will try to render to null, but I
find I enjoy the security of watching the render. When I press the space bar
and hide the image you would think it would not take longer than rendering to
null.

If you're referring back to your earlier question of 1 or 2 megs on a Targa+,
no it makes no diff to rendering. We got the 2 meg (Targa+64) to make better
use of VideoMaker+ in making tapes of a series of still images with nice
transitions.
Actually, it makes no difference Targa or no — rendering is TOTALLY
independent of the video board — it's how you told 3DS to make the file
(obviously if you don't have NULL selected as the rendering device, what you
see may be garbage, but…).
