#NEC CD-74??

Ok, I am looking to get one of the NEC CD-74 Multimedia galleries that comes
with the 6 CDs. I've read that it comes with a sound card; what card is this
and is it used with most software (like the Soundblaster and Adlib are used)?
Also, what are the best sources of find reviews/information about CD-ROM discs?

The basic NEC CDR-74 Gallery comes with the MediaVision PAS+ sound card.
I bought one for $799 and find that it runs everything fine so far and was an
easy install. You have to get the Mediavision drivers on their forum and
install them for optimal performance. I believe there is also a top line NEC
CDR_74 Gallery that sells for about $1200 and includes the PAS16. I assume it
also includes additional features to account for the $400 price difference.
The software bundle is in my opinion a good buy. Groliers encyclopedia,
Sherlock Holmes Consulting and Carmen Santiago Deluxe are outstanding. I am
satisfied with the PAS+ version for now because I believe all of the
commercial CD-ROMS that I am running are 8-bit anyway as far as the data file
sound goes. By the way, many of the retail sellers really do not know what
sound cards are included in these packages and they frequently assume it is
the PAS16 if it is from Mediavision.

Thanks a lot for the info. I've decided on the NEC Galley; it seems like a good
deal with the discs you get. And as long as the sound card is truly
Soundblaster-compatible, everything will be great.
Can you tell me good sources for the NEC CDR-74-1 bundle? For some reason I
thought all the bundles were with internal drives, but the NEC 74 is what I
want. Does it come with a SCSI controller? I already have an ADP1542B. Would
$799 be a good price for the bundle if I could buy the drive alone for $561?
I'm tempted to get a bundle for the ROMs and also because I can't make my mind
up on the sound card – seems like its just worth taking the plunge. (Then I'll
need speakers….)

PS, I also have an old Sony drive with a proprietary interface. It doesn't
have a front panel headphone socket or rear connectors to join to the sound
board, but it does have some pins that I believe are audio. Can I do anything
with this for Multimedia?
