#CDROM DRIVE FOR PS2

Hi, please help! At the office, we have a ibm ps-2, model 70. Can this system
support a CDROM? Will ANY CDROM work or do I need a special drive for a PS2
MODEL 70? Also, since it is a 286 system, will that make any difference in the
SPEED of the CDROM, or will that be the determined by the specs of the drive
itself? Yes, a 486 would be better, but atheya do not want to buy a new
computer for the secretary. It is a legal office, and they only use the
computer for word processing… They want to buy a legal CD and need a drive,
and I donot know how to advise. Please help!!! Thanks.
Last I heard, a model 70 was a 386. Even a 286 will run circles around a fast
CDROM. The real question is whether you can get DOS/Windoze drivers for the
SCSI card. Find out what card you will use and then ask in the COREL forum.
Sorry, my mistake, I meant a Model 50. I heard that there is a SCSI parallel
cable that can be used. Have you heard anything about that? Thanks.
Your Model 50 has slots… you can plug a standard Micro Channel card into
there like the Trantor T228. Or you can use a MiniSCSI series adapter to plug
into the parallel port. Both have been tested with the Model 50 and CD-ROM
drives!

I just used the T348 for hooking my CDROM to a Model 95 with caching host
adapter. You might want to add to your OS/2 readme file that it's ok to have
two SCSI host adapters, that the OS figures it out and assigns the correct
drivers (hard disk, CDROM) to the correct HA. Do I need a newer Trantor driver
for use with the beta drivers in OS2SUPPORT/S17/OS2CDR.ZIP? I'm currently using
the one from the disk that came with the HA with no problems, but haven't
really hammered on it much. The readme file in the ZIP said that Trantor is
still testing but it's got a pretty old date.
Yes, I'm putting up with a Trantor Mini-SCSI plus parallel-port host adapter.
It works pretty well, but I figure that the caching controller should be faster
and present less of a load to the operating system, so I'd rather use that. I
got the Trantor to load OS/2 on our OEM systems, when IBM starts shipping GA on
CDROM. It sure beats 30 floppies.
