Ernest, May we know why you ask? Kathy

Good question Kathy. I started to respond and started wondering the same thing. Like you, I've put a lot of work and research into putting together my system and don't know that I want to give away all my efforts that easily. Jerry

Call me dumbo, but I can't see why answering my question would cause such a response. 🙂 I am currently working on a CD-Rom authoring kit and would like to avoid the "mistakes" that other vendors have had problems with. The application is mostly going to be an inhouse deal, but I never like to close any doors. Ernest R. Ewert

Ernest, I'm not calling anyone Dumbo. Far from it. What my experience has been is that about half of what people tell you is correct. Some of the folks who "helped" me gather my information gave me "facts" that turned out to be far from truth, even impossible. Of course learning the reality has been an expensive education. As is true of most things, information is the real power one company has over another. Jerry

If I may ask now, what does your company do that would preclude you from offering a few comments on your experiences with CD-R technology? Specificaly, what do you think of the various products availble. I am just trying to get a feel for what people think in the industry. Our application is a strictly in-house deal. We needed more control than any of the stand-a-lone apps would give. If we could have done it without rolling our own we would have. If you feel that you can not answer my question then so be it. I still don't understand your hesitation! Ernie

Ernie, I think some of the products currently used to make CD-Rs have a long ways to go before they're what I'd call a good software product. I think some of them have come a long ways and are acceptable products now. Compared to what we had just a couple years ago, or even a year ago, we have great products. The most needed feature I see in software is a verification feature that's fast enough to not be cumbersome. I think most firms who are considering the purchase of CD-R equipment have not thought out the process from an economic standpoint. The equipment still isn't cheap. The training to operate the equipment still isn't free. The labor to operate the equipment still isn't free. Most firms would be better off making a volume contract with an outside firm rather than spending the money to do it in house. It would be cheaper when all things are considered. Very few firms need CD-Rs so fast that they can't be expressed to an outside firm and expressed back. In some cases they could even be delivered by or picked up. You said you need more control than stand-alone applications can give you. May I ask what project you're trying to do? Have to talked with anyone who has done some work similar to that? Jerry, We use CD-R to store image files. Durring a busy day we can master 5 CD's. (some times up to 4 copies of each disk.) For us we need the ability to make the transfer process transparent. i.e.: 1. Place a DISK in the drive. 2. Hit Enter. 3. Wait 40 Minutes 4. Take Disk Out. NONE of the packages we have looked at will give us this ability. Personal Scribe is closest so far. >> I think some of the products currently used to make CD-Rs have a long >> ways to go before they're what I'd call a good software product. What don't you like about the current software? What is missing? >> I think some of them have come a long ways and are acceptable products >> now. What is YOUR definition of acceptable? >> Compared to what we had just a couple years ago, or even a year ago, >> we have great products. Your company or the Market in general? Also… What is CD Solutions? Is your company like Kathys? Ernie inVzn Development Corporation
