Now I remember that there was a famous science fiction writer burned out
by the Oakland Hills fire. Who? Is he planning to rebuild? I would, at
least if something is done about the narrow access roads. (I haven't read of
any plans, except some threats to make the neighborhood pay PG&E's costs for
installing new _underground_ utilities.)
Of course, hillsides around here are a gamble. They're subject to
landslides, and even houses with deep pilings can be threatened by mudslides
from the hills behind them.

Landslides, earthquakes, high humidity–makes the point I made to Ed that
there is nowhere you can live that doesn't have a downside.
I can't remember who got the full burnout at the moment, but I'm just in on
less than 6 hours sleep from an SF convention in New York and the mind is
hardly operating on all cylinders. Will let you know when I get some sleep and,
if all else fails, I'll ask my wife who it was. I know somebody's recently
ex-wife who got the house got burned out….
