#PPage 4 arrived but…

Give a hint; how did you get PPage4 to upgrade Pp3? Or did you just delete
Pp3 & install Pp4? My version asked no questions & took no prisoners <g>.
I ended up with old Pp3 in it's original drawer, Pp4 in the new drawer the
"install" insisted on makimg (contrary to docs) & wrote to Pp3's .DFLT &
.ini files so I had this strange mish mash. How come YOU lucked out? Good
living? Pass it on.

I just today installed the update to ProPage 4.0. I ran the install
program, and it was as smooth as could be. At each step of the way, I
verified the drawer into which things were to be installed, and it
over-wrote my old files with the new ones. I haven't tried to do any work
with it yet, but it loads and looks great. Wonder why yours gave so much
trouble?

My install did none of those thing. There was no way to control the making
of a new drawer that I could see…just made a new drawer & installed Pp4
there. I did nothing but click on "install" as per instuctions. I find
most docs are inexact…leaving out "little" thing like "make a *file*
when thay MEAN make an *ASCII file*….BIG difference. Maybe if I had put
Pp4 into my Pagepage drawer where I have Pp3 it would have worked BUT one
doc said it made a new drawer & NOTHING about overwriting to update old
Pp3 files, as most other upgrade docs tell you. My karma strikes again
<g>. I guess delete & reinstall is in order.

I selected the Expert User option on the first screen of the installer, so
it asked me about every item it put on. It came up with a statement that
says something close to: "You currently have ProPage assigned to
PRG:PPAGE. Shall I overwrite that one, or make a new drawer?" I told it
to overwrite. IT stopped after every step to tell me what the next step
would do, and ask if I wanted to change the directory, etc.

I have used the C= installer on other programs that work that way…this
one did *not*. There was no choice of "user' (though it was "Expert"
according to Log). That is what I expected. Believe it or not, Philip to
the contrary, I do know what I'm doing (some of the the time <g>). Others
had the sane problem, so we must have received disks that did not have a
correct install program. I redid it 4 times & not once did I get an
"overwrite screen", but I did get an enormous .ini file. I have it working
now.

I'm glad it's working. My update was ordered late and just arrived a few
days ago. Perhaps it had been corrected before they sent mine.

Firstly I have had problems in the past with Commodores installer prog. An
easy way round install problems is to get rid of any assigns refering to the
old version, in this case PPage3. Then reboot of course. Run the install prog
and away it goes but I always install on a different partition to be on the
safe side. Ok so it all worked. Now look at the .ini file in s: and delete all
references to the old version and its path. You should end up with no more than
about 11 lines pointing to the various parts of the Page installation.
CGFonts doesn't need to be a sub dir within PPage although it doesn't matter
if it is. As long as the assign points to the right place and the .ini file
says FE dh2:cgfonts in my case anyway.

I think that's the first cogent reponse re: ppage.ini yet. Thanks. I
looked at my ppage.ini just now and I have multiple references to GE in
different places. Also some things just repeat themselves (HY, TF, etc). I
have 30 lines of paths in that file. It appears that the install appended
instead of replaced things. When I get back from vacation, I'll tear into
it.

I guess by the process of elimination (4 install runs) I came to the same
conclusions. I now have at least 3 GE's, & 2 of everything else EXCEPT
only one TFE & PSF in my .ini <giggle>. I'm almost afraid to delete
extras..may be a secrete GD code ;^[. These are made up for by a very
scimpy .DFLT, only SCN, PS, & TXF, opps..just got some more. Still at it.
I think I've got! By George, she's got it! 4 hrs and a lot of tears later
(Ppage kept making the s: files uneditable!) I think have it set up so Pp
can find everything & the PS fonts DL to printer. I think GD owes us a
rebate for doing all their work.

Pete,
In using the Whap! editor you must make the first character of each line a
dot (.) to force the CIS editor from formatting it. AutoPilot will add the
dot for you when it uploads the POST.
CIS editor recognizes the first character, the dot, as a formatting
command. It tells the editor to leave this line alone.

won't get message headers and don't no why….yet 🙂

Pretty much what I have, except GD put Genies in SYS:S. I kept CGFonts in
Ppage, WHICH has to be assigned, thank you very much, no matter what
Philip & GD say. It doesn't work when I take it out of my user startup.

PPage should offer a PREFS requestor to let us reassign things like the
location of fonts, GrE, etc., so we don't have to hack the .INI file. I
know PPage tech support has said it's risky to play around with the .INI,
but then again when things aren't working right, there should be an easier
way to make repairs than by reinstalling the entire program.

Sorry, but Gold Disk is convinced we are too stupid to edit their
wonderous .INI file. They are apparently also convinced we have no
business moving their files around on our hard drives after installing
PPage.
Personally, after a particularly joyous DTP session last night, I have
erased PPage 4.0A from my A3000 system and will soon do the same favor for
my A1200. When GD releases a version minus "how could they have possibly
missed that one?" bugs (such as the 8-bit IFF import problem) and
crashing-upon-exit problems, I may reinstall it. In the meantime I'll keep
version 3.0 around.
Then again, I'm currently in the process of creating PageStream-format
versions of all my important PPage files. When this process is complete, I
may scrap PPage entirely.
One thing is for sure: GD won't be getting any bucks from me next time.

Gracia: That's exactly what happened to me with 4.0A. Now in addition to
the problems you mentioned, I often can't get old templates to open. PPage
4 asks if I want to override color definition `', whatever that is, then
tells me these empty documents are corrupt and refuses to load them. Sigh.
I may have to keep using the old version until 4.1 comes out, if past
experience is any indicator.

I'm sorry you are suffering also, but I must say I feel a little
vindicated. BTW PPage won't run without an assign for CGFonts! So much for
GD and their .ini file which are supposed to replace assigns. So far I can
open old stuff. Haven't tried the important things, like my newsletter;
chicken, I guess.
The "paint" program is a joke, considering the Amiga is a graphic machine
if nothing else, & has had Dpaint for 7 years!

I'm not as yet convinced the .ini file is another type of assign. I get the
impression it is more of a set of path commands.

I agree with you, but Philip insists it replaces the assigns. But since my
Pp4 can't find CG fonts without an assign, I'll continue to assign. What
ever works.

There is a new maintenance release for ProDraw 3 to bring it up to 3.03. Got
it in the mail yesterday. It is supposed to make it run under WB 3, fix some
problems with dingbat style fonts, gradiant filled compound objects, and custom
keymaps.
You should be in good shape soon!

Thanks for news. Philip said he was going to UL a fix. Maybe this is it.
As usual it will take 3 wks to get to the States. I really need the
fix…promised some one special pins for a Broadway opening night.

I don't think Philip can upload the PDraw 3.03 patch up here – it
consisted of a new PDraw executeable! Not a patch!
Am sure if you ask Philip real nice like he will get you a copy quicker
than 3 weeks.

It's not GD that takes 3 wks, it's our dumb postal service!! Anyway,
Philip thinks I'm nuts <giggle> which may be true, but never the less
there is a big bug in Pp4 (or the 4000). Now I can't use Pp4 to do the
pin, because of bug grrrrr. What I don't understand is that it worked the
other day. I didn't like the results and went to do over and got big lock
up & guru. It's always something.
