Can anybody help me to obtain information on Photo CD's. I have some specific information that I need regarding the conventions used by KODAK for assigning Volume Labels to the CD and as to how the image files are named. Question 1. Is the volume label always in the the format "PCDxxx"? On the CD that I have, the "xxxx" appears to be a month and date, e.g. "0292". What if you obtain several CD's in a month. Will they all have the same volume label? Question 2. Are image files always of the form "IMGyyyy.PCD", where yyyy is a number starting with 0001 and is incremented for each image on the disk? I am trying to incorporate support for Photo CD's in my image catalogoing program PixFolio. My problem is that if each disk contains the same file names, I have to come up with some other way to be able to uniquely name a file so as to be able to catalog it. One method would be to use the volume label plus a number, e.g. PCD0292.003 which would translate to file IMG0003.PCD on disk "PCD0202". This won't work if the volume labels are not unique or are longer than 8 bytes long. Does anybody know the answers to these questions? Thanks Allen Kempe

Allen – > Can anybody help me to obtain information on Photo CD's… I wonder if you could get this info directly from Kodak. I know they have their "DCI (Desktop Color Imaging) Developer" program, but that's $395 to $795 annually, and sounds like it provides a lot more support than what you're looking for. Maybe if you asked nicely, they could send you a basic specification manual for a minimal price, or pointers to public documents. The worst they could do is say "no". There is a very informative file on PhotoCD in one of the libraries in CDROM forum. —Betty

Allen, The volume label is not related to the creation date, each disc has it's own unique ID number. As for the image numbers they are all the same from disc to disc. If you call into our Customer Assistance Center at 800-242-2424 ext 53 we can send you our software developer information package. This might provide answers to many of your question.
