Pioneer 600kb trans.
5 messages in this thread
I just heard about a new CD-Rom drive from Pioneer with a 280 ms access time
and 600 kb transfer rate. Price is around $650 for an external drive.
Can anyone tell me anything about this drive such as model number, is it
shipping, where can I order it?
Jerry
Jerry Warner wrote asking about an external Pioneer drive with 280ms access
time, 600Kb/sec transfer rate and price "around" $650.
There is a Pioneer rep who occasionally appears here so perhaps he can give a
definitive answer. However I think the person who gave you the information may
have been mistaken.
I get Pioneer press releases and can't recall having seen such a drive
mentioned. There is however the Pioneer 600 and 604X which are six-disc
cartridge drives. The 604X has an access time of 300ms and transfer rate of
612Kb/sec. It's list price is something like $1,800 without SCSI interface and
the street price is about $1,400 without interface.
I think the new Toshiba has an access of something like 270/280ms but I believe
it is a double-speed (ie: 300Kb/sec) drive and it may have a street price
around that which you mentioned.
Could your informant have got the two confused?
Jim,
I wouldn't say the guy who told me is right or wrong. I don't know. He does
work in computers often and generally knows what he's talking about. I asked
him if the unit was a multi-disc unit and he said "No, but I don't know the
model number".
If such a drive exist, I want one.
Jerry
Well good luck in finding that drive, Jerry. I'll be going to COMDEX in Atlanta
in May and will try to pick up what I can — I have a special interest in
Pioneer because I have one. I'll also be talking with a company regional sales
manager in the next couple of weeks and he might know something about it if I
can remember to ask.
If you like you could try calling Sharon Gomez. She's marketing coordinator for
the Optical Memory Division of Pioneer. Her office number is (408) 988-1702.
The Optical Memory Division is the one that looks after CD-ROM and other such
products for Pioneer and she would definitely know if such a drive is available
and if so, the names of dealers near you.
If it turns out to be the double-speed Toshiba, their number is (714) 583-3000
for further information.
Let me know how it works out. I still think your friend might be a little
confused but if not I'd like to get the correct info for my own files. Cheers!
Jim,
I'm guessing he's confused and is thinking of the Pioneer 640. I _wish_ he was
right but my guess is that he isn't.
