#EGSSpect inst prob
6 messages in this thread
I am trying to install an EGS Spectrum. The first try didn't succeed so I tried
to pretend an install with a log to file (and also once with a log to printer).
I immediately get an error message which say
"GETENV: String too long".
This has happened repeatedly. I have recopied the install disks but it still
happens.
What is wrong?
Thanks.
Bill
Bill,
Pretend mode is not that reliable, especially when your script attempts to
create directories or access assignments. What I'd like to know is what failed
in the initial REAL installation. This will give me some idea of how to
proceed. If you are familiar with de-archiving, you may want to check the
files on the diskettes for errors. If you encounter errors, send in the disks
with your warranty card for replacements.

Thank you for your reply to my note. This morning after re-reading the manual
and reading the install program, I tried again to install the EGS/Spectrum
software. I used the "Expert" mode. Everything appeared to go alright, but I
still am not able to use the board as follows:
When the LOGO appears (briefly) it is very dark. I have been able to select the
LEGS VGA 640×480 screenmode in WB and get a display that truly fills the
screen. However, when I attempt to load EGS-Paint I get a message that
edsradio.library (sp?) won't load. It is present in the DH0:EGS/libs/eds
directory (and I have copied it into DHO:lib as well). When I select EGS-INFO I
am told that egsrequest.library won't open. It is also present in the
DH0:EGS/libs directory.
I am unable to get EGS-ScreenMode or EGS-DisplayAdjust to open at all.
I have tried uncompressing Disk 2 again in a separate directory and replacing
the two library files. This also didn't help.
My system is –
A2000 accelerated with a Mega-Midget Racer (68030/33) with co-processor and
A2320 video enhancer cabled to EGS 28/24 Spectrum. The monitor is a Zenith CZM
1490 VGA monitor. I selected VGA when installing the Spectrum software.
Thank you for your assistance.

It sounds like the de-archiving process is damaging the library files. Try
turning all CPU caches off, or even disabling the '030 to install EGS and then
turn everything back on again when you've finished installing.
This is just an outside guess; I'm not sure it has any relevance to this issue,
but the fact that two libraries that are pretty critical to EGS's operation
aren't opening is pretty strange…

Mr. Reeves,
The Mega Midget Racer is very likely causing problems with the Amiga's
configuration of the Spectrum card. Please disable the MMR and run the
Spectrum software again. If it works, then we know that the Spectrum card
works. Our engineers have been informed about this potential incompatiblity
and will be looking into this.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will do so tomorrow and post the
results. Ironically I will have a GForce accelerator by early next
week so the MMR will be history soon anyhow.
