I ordered the monitor from a place called Video Works in CA. Richard
Beausang here in this forum got the 20" unit from them and he says it
looks nice. I figure you can't go wrong with a Diamond Scan. I'm using a
13" one now. They shipped to the East Coast for $70 and the needed cable
was $35. Can't wait till I get it.

I talked to Steve. He was helpful and said many Amiga people have
purchased this monitor.
Forgive me for jumping into the thread without reading its earlier
messages, but has the DiamondScan been re-introduced? Or are they
selling used ones, and for what kind of prices? Those monitors scan
down to 15kHz, right?

You didn't jump in on this thread, I just changed the header from the
Busted Buster thread. Funny how that can cause confusion 🙂
These a factory refurbished units and they do scan down to 15kHz. I'm
using it now! See my next message to Michael for more details.

I got it! Here's the scoop:
First of all, it is actually 19" when I measure the diagonal, although
I was told it is 20". Also, it doesn't say "Diamond Scan" anywhere,
although it looks exactly like the 19" Diamond Scan I've seen at
work. I've hooked it up and am using Super 72 mode (800 x 600) and
after some tweeking it works great. Nice text, rich colors. I have
not compared it any other monitor this size, but it looks cool to me.
It comes with a one year factory warranty and this unit says manufactured
in 1990 (remember it is refurbished).
Here are the specs as listed in the manual:
Horizontal Scan: 15.7 kHz to 38.0 kHz
Vertical Scan: 45hz to 90 Hz
Resolution: 1280 x 768 (this is an odd resolution; 1024 x 768 or
1280 x 1024 are more typical)
DotPitch: 0.31 mm
Non-Glare Screen
Adjustments for Horiz and Vert size and position, plus the all important
pin cusion adjustments (two of them).
With MonED and some tweeking I have no black borders in Super 72 mode. I
have tried it on all ECS modes and it does indeed sync to them all. I
don't have a flicker fixer (OpalVision is in there) but I'm definately
getting a Picasso II real soon.
The only down side I've found so far is that when a 15kHz screen pops up,
and I then go back to Super 72 mode, the teeking I did to eliminate the
black borders is undone and I have to retweek. The adjustments are on a
side panel so its not too bad. I just have to resize the vertical. MonED
takes care of the horizontal.
Autopilot is all I've used so far, but I can't wait to use this with Real
3D. And imagine the games!

OK, I figured out that I'm supposed to have the monitor memorize the
adjustments for the different scan frequencies. It can remember six
different settings for six different frequencies.
Everything is rosey now 8>).

Then aren't you really going to wish you had a monitor with a higher scan
rate so you could display more resolution?

VideoWorks also carries multiscans that will synch at higher rates.
Problem there is they don't synch down to 15khz.

I picked up one of the new Sony 17" SE monitors — $1299. Awsome
contrast. 1024×800 at 72hz is pretty cool, too (now I need some more
video RAM). I'm going to get a CTX 17" for half the price to compare it
to.

I haven't seen the new Sony monitor yet, but I've heard they're as awesome
as their price. Those intangible assets must be netting a tangible result
8^). Let us know the results of your monitor comparison.
On another note, I was channel surfing the other night and came up with an
interview with a big graphics firm VP by the name of Dale Larson. Any
relationship?

Yes Dale, I wish I could afford a monitor that scans higher, but this
monitor was only $600. And I think 1024 x 768 will be hold me for a
while.
Just for comparison, I noticed Mitsubishi's latest 21" offering lists for
$3200.
