I finally took the time to download the testing program you speak of. It sounds
like just the ticket for our CAD classes. However, when I attempt to install it
using the provided SETUP.EXE, I get a nasty fatal error as it attempts the
install the first file. The message dialog says:
THREED.VBX could not be installed.
Am I doing something wrong (I read the README, too!), or what's up?
Can you take a school P.O.? If this thing works anything like you say, it's
gotta be a bargain at $59.

I had the same problem installing a program I downloaded from this forum. I
had to rename the existing THREED.VBX in my Windows directory to something like
THREED.XXX, then re-run the install program.

I am the person responsible for uploading the AQT exam. Did this
manouver solve the installation problems?

The program that I was having problem installing was not the AQT exam, but
rather a shareware evaluation copy of TEK Development Media Blastoff. But in
answer to your question, when I renamed the existing copy of THREED.VBX in my
Windows directory to THREED.XXX, the install process then worked correctly.
I read the catalog explanation of the AQT exam. It seems to be ONLY for people
using AutoCAD for Windows. Would the program be of any use if I am running
AutoCAD 386 for DOS under Windows 3.1?

Yes it would be useful for anyone using AutoCAD under any environment.
The AQT needs to run under Windows thats the only requirement.

For those interested…..We here at Hit Return Incorporated have a mirror image
of the AutoCAD Certification Exam that runs under AutoCAD….forget the
platform!!! It contains all the same levels that the Certification Exam
contains, and even provides the same scoring convention…that is…..it lets
the testor know how they're doing in Dimensions, Layering, Basic Draw, Advanced
Edit, etc…..
We're putting this Bad-boy on the market in numerous ways…including a special
mailer to all ATC's….

Do you have an evaluation version of your ACAD exam software that I could try?
Sorry Cameron… The Test (and included test builder) are on their
way to the publisher, who already has a number of beta sites
established for review. We met with the publisher just yesterday
(Monday), and they are pushing this process pretty fast
now…..finally…..I wrote the looney thing over the christmas
season and it's been sitting since then… All ATC's will be "direct
mailed", so a swinging deal will be soon to follow…

Don't butt in just say excuse me and upload a demo on the
forums…:-) Seriously.. did you download mine and will you upload
yours? If your system runs in AutoCAD and ours does not require
AutoCAD. sounds like different applications for different reasons.

I did not download your application of the exam…though I probably should!!!
Our program is and AutoCAD testor as well as a test builder….which means that
the instructor can "fill in" the questions and respective answers, then push
the happy button, and the program writes another test in LSP and DCL, which
will run on any AutoCAD platform (excluding LT!!!).
The program is on its way to the publishers, who has several beta sites
established…we'll keep ya posted, but more than likely the ATC's will get a
mailing soon to the effect.

Our application allows the instructor to build an exam as well. But does
not run in AutoCAD. How do you handle exam takers being able to poke around in
AutoCAD to find out answers (or is this like an open book exam)…
Whan you said that this exam was "mirroring the ACE" what did you mean?
that it followed the content and/or the format ie. multiple choice and drawing
sections. Are you going to provide preset exams as well?

I'm not sure of the problem you are having. I'll check with Amer (he is
the VB programmer) of the AQT…and get back to you.
College P.O.'s will be fine. We will ship product based on that (as long
as it is eventially followed by a cheque…:-)….)
Ok that was quick I just checked with Amer. Are you running anything on
top of windows? or do you have Windows installed into a directory other than
\windows. Anyway you may have to install manually if you cannot install
without a windows shell so the following must me done.
copy the following files to your windows system directory
threed.vb_ vbrun300.dl_ ver.dl_
then using the expand.exe in \windows expand the files in the following manner
expand threed.vb_ threed.vbx expand vbrun300.dl_ vbrun300.dll expand ver.dl_
ver.dll
copy the remaining files to a directory say \IAS and expand those files as well
the files in that directory should be eventually:
aqt.exe level1.dat a10q8.wmf a10q4.wmf a10q3.wmf
then set up a program item in window for aqt.exe and run it… hope fully this
will all work.. Let me know what happens. It is so important to us to figure
out what is happening when people have problems..

I am running Windows for Workgroups, version 3.11. Windows is installed in
C:\WINDOWS. I tried the SETUP.EXE install again with no other tasks running
(except Program Manager, of course). The results were the same.
I used the manual procedures that you described and successfully installed the
files and was able to get the demo running. Seems to be a pretty slick testing
method. I have a few suggestions and questions for you:
1) The LEVEL1.DAT file is not encrypted at all, and appears to be ASCII.
Anyone smart enough to use a text editor could easily open and read this file,
and it's pretty easy to decipher the answers from the questions. Can this file
be encrypted or written in a binary format? Or is this just part of the demo
that is handled differently in the actual program?
2) At the "Please enter …" dialog box, there needs to be a "Exit Test"
button for someone that inadvertantly started the program. As it is now, the
only way to exit the program is to use "End Task" from the Task Manager.
3) Can the RESULTS.TXT file be encrypted or redirected to a hidden or
"write-only" directory on a file server? It's too easy to open and edit this
file with a text editor, changing the grade.
4) Can the Certificate of Completion be printed?
5) Does the test program have the ability of checking the RESULTS.TXT file to
see if someone has already taken the test yet? Seems like if someone didn't
like their grade, they could just take it again until the grade was acceptable
to them.

I don't have much time now. But quickly I'd like to thank you for the
suggestions. Some of them are being adressed in our current programming
efforts. Especially encription. We would also like to have the certificate
printable. Do you think the certificate is a good idea to give the student
immediate feedback? Or should it only go to the file in order that the
instructor compile and give the results later?

As far as the certificate, I know in my case I would probably prefer to have it
print immediately, so I can hand it to the student when they complete the exam,
just like the ACE exam. What if you put a setting in the .DAT file that
specified what to do at the completion of the test? Other settings could be the
path to the RESULTS file, minimum passing grade, as well as others.
It's a neat program with lots of promise. Keep me posted on updates.

Thanks for the suggestions. So you would like to have control over how
the exam marks are reported? sort of like a check box ( print to screen, to
printer, or file or all of the above?
