#FLARE help!
7 messages in this thread
Hi. I'm having some trouble with the IPAS flare generator. For some reason
the Occlusion Sensing doesn't work. With it turned off I get the lens flares I
expect, but when it's on, the only time I get lens flares is when the flared
object starts to go behind another object. I've checked and double-checked the
settings and everything is set up right. Is this a bug? What have I
forgotten? My 3ds.set file is correct and the color or the flared object is
correct. What else should I try? Thanks.
The most common problem most people have with occlusion sensing is using
ambient and specular colors in the self-illuminating material instead of just
diffuse. If you're doing that, set them to black. If that's not your problem,
you'll have to simplify it, zip it up with a text file explaining exactly
what's going on, email it to me via CIS binary email. I'll have time to look
at it on Saturday evening (my CIS private email catchup day) and will tell you
exactly what's going on with it then.
Hopefully it's nothing more unusual than just the old ambient/specular color
issue.

The color choice may be the problem. I know i have the ambient and diffuse
set to pure white (255s all the way across). I'll try changing that & see what
happens. If that doesn't help I'll send the info you requested.
I know I did render a frame of the animation with no flare, slipped it into
a paint program & checked the color of the object to be flared and it
definitely was pure white, if that makes any difference. Thanks.
There's your problem. The ambient and specular colors ought to be 0,0,0, and
the diffuse color ought to be not white or black. Diffuse needs to be an
explicit Hue.

Yep, that was it! After I left a message here I experimented with different
colors & it works fine! Before I experimented with different shades of gray
(changed luminance on white) and got no results. Just for the heck of it I
tried the color suggested in the manual (green) and it did what it's supposed
to do. thanks for the help!
That's what I'm here for, Glenn.
Happy flaring,

By the way, the flare effect looks great! Bravo, gentlemen!
