FYI – Press Release 3/8/94
Viewpoint Datalabs has been working this past year on a system to replace the
plumb bobs and tape measures used the past 30 years to do the technical
inspections of INDYCARS at the races. IBM is a partner with us and has
provided the computer hardware. We are using FARO mechanical digitizing arms
and wrote custom software for the interface. So far it has basic graphics but
will eventually have some good graphics. There are over 16 races this year with
the first one in Brisbane Australia. The rest are in the U.S. I would love to
hear from any INDY followers out there ….. especially while I am in Australia
next week.

Cool! FARO is just down the street from us in Lake Mary, FL! In fact, they did
a presentation at one of our recent Orlando SIGGRAPH meetings. Best of luck
with the project, if anyone can afford those FARO digitizers it is the Indy
circuit! <G>

ps – Are you one of the Viewpoint guys that made it to I/ITSEC?
John,
Sounds interesting……..are you involved with the drawing of the 3d models?
I'm a huge motorsports fan, My real love is NASCAR but I like just about any
type of race car.
I built a 3D winston cup car…..It was used in a TV animation for TNN. Use
Nascar guys usually get hand-me downs from INDY cars. The technical inspection
of NASCAR racers is done by putting templates that match production car specs
on top of the race car. It's not to technical.
I'd be very interested in hearing more about the project. Please let me know if
you have any more info.
