Fractint, The Rolls Royce of fractal programs! This is a port of
the msdos/x fractint program. Ported from Xfractint 2.03 (fractint 18.2) by
Terje Pedersen. Includes source. It requires A4000 and OS3.0+. fracd.lha
is the datafiles for this program. Put the data dir in the fractint
directory.

I'm a registered ms-dos fractint user. It sure would be nice to run it on my
Amiga. Why only a 4000? Wouldn't a 500 with dos 3.1 and several Megs of
32-bit RAM work?

The program probably takes advantage of the AGA chipset, which the 500
does not have.

Why can't it be used on a 1200, then?
Well, what if I added an external video slot with Picasso AGA emulation to my
500? Never mind. I told my guitarist to pour treacle in the thing if I ever
suggested upgrading it. I'll just buy a 4000 if I wan't to run Fractint that
badly.

It probably can't be used on the 1200 because there is no floating point
unit on the 1200.

Unless, you've upgraded your 1200…
My 1200 has both an MMU and an FPU. (And is over twice as fast as an
A3000.) 🙂

FPU?

I like Fractint on My 4000 at work, but at Home the other 4000
crashes..
probably some little goodie like psnap…
It's a pretty big download, so ti might take me a while to get it…

That's why I don't normally run things like that… (Only whe I absolutely
have to!)

it probably uses both the AGA modes and the FPU of the '040 chip. The
500 doesn't have either, and the 1200 is missing the FPU.

I left this message before, but the system seems to have eaten it!
Is the uploader the author? If not, could you get the uploader's
address out of the archive for me? I'd like to ask him if he's be
willing to lobotomize the program to work on a non-AGA system, even
if only in disk-output mode. (And if not, why he didn't archive the
source separately… I started porting it from an old version, but
didn't finish. If his version is reasonably current, it shouldn't be
too much trouble to modify it to work with other machines, rather
than me porting from scratch.

At the moment the program needs OS3.0 due to the use of:

If you are REALLY looking for the Rolls Royce of fractal genoratos, try Fractal
Pro 6.0 by MegaGem. Can be used on ECS or AGA amigas, however, on ECS machines
it renders in HAM bt can by saved and displayed on 24 bit boards such as
Firecracker, Toaster, and others. Also supprots annimations and AREXX
scripts!!!
