I'm not sure, but I believe MSVC will run under Windows 3.1 with
Win32s or Win32c. Regardless, it seems likely that they'd make it
available under Chicago (i.e., Windows 4.0).
I think the main reason for using NT is speed and protection during
the development process. A powerhouse PC isn't too expensive, and if
you get Windows _and_ Macintosh applications out of it it's more than
worth it!

Guess you haven't priced out the system needed lately, have you?
Estimates are $5,000 for a minimal system. And, that doesn't even
get a large screen that most Macintosh developers would demand.
You should know about a little product called PowerPC based Macintosh
that Apple is coming out with. This "toy" product is way cheaper (as
far as bang for buck) than an NT system.

That's what I thought. I put together my "powerhouse PC" for, hmm, about
$4,000, but that's a 19" monitor, 3401 CDROM, 1.2 gig disk, 16 megs, and a
486/66, high-end SCSI, networking, and a pricey video card. A thousand here,
a thousand there, pretty soon you're talking real money. 🙂

And the worst part is your system would need another 16Meg of RAM (for 32Meg
total) to bring it up to *minimum* levels to handle the Microsoft stuff.
Pretty sad situation — you have a pretty hot system.

I'm not about to try to compare the '040 with the 486/66. So much depends on
other factors. Right now, I run a Mac IIci with 20M RAM, 1.4 gig hard disk,
24-bit video, networking, CD, scanner. And the current Mac product line
boggles my mind, I don't know which is the "top of the line" these days.

The recently released PowerPC models would be top of the line, though until the
software you need runs in native mode you'd probably be taking a performance
hit. A Quadra 800 is probably the faster 68k machine available.

Neil,
I am the proud owner of a Compaq Prolinea 4/50 (80486 @ 50mHz) which, with
monitor, keyboard, intenal data/fax modem, large hard disk, eight megs of RAM,
etc. costs less than $2500. And, I bought it a year ago!
I'm well aware of the PowerPC coming out, and have not nor do not consider it a
"toy". I'll own one of them soon enough.

My point isn't that you don't have a good quality system for a nominal amt of
money. My point is that your quality system isn't anywhere what you'll need
for Wingz. You'll need to spend roughly double what you spent a year ago and
that will only bring you to the *minimum* system.

Yes, MSVC-32 will run under Win 3.1 with Win32s in place. It'll even run at
the regular DOS prompt in command-line-mode; it has its own DOS extender
built-in.
