#Exabyte Driver – WOW!!!!

Suresh A few months ago you mentioned that you had just gotten a copy of TapeDisk software that allowed an Exabyte drive to be mounted as a DOS device. How is that going. Is it still working for you. Does anyone know where to get Exabyte drives. Has anyone tried to hook one up to a Macintosh? We are a mixed platform house that needs a fast backup system, lots of capacity for animations and occaisonally to be able to send files to service bureaus. By the way, anyone have any recommendations for Abekas service bureaus? Thanks Terry Gilbert

John, We are centrally located (near Kansas City). Since our only contact with a service bureau will probably be by phone and Fedex I don't suppose location is all that important. Of course it would be nice to have a local shop so that if things go wrong you can yell at a real person and not just a phone.<g> Terry Gilbert

I don't know for sure, but I would imagine SOMEONE in KC would have an Abekas DDR. Maybe you can call Abekas (Mountain View, Ca) and find out? OTO, places like PVR, The Post Group, etc… probably do as much out of town buisness as local. John Tissavary (La Luna cie)

I use my Exabyte 8500 on the PC, under DOS with the ASPITAPE and PCTAR programs, under WinNT with the system drivers, on the Mac with Soft Backup II, but I've never found a 'tar' for the Mac, and on the Amiga with the 'btn' and GNU 'tar'. Although I was the person who initially talked with the TapeDisk people to introduce them to the needs of users on this forum, I've never used their software. It sounds interesting, though. I've also been hunting for a 'tar' for WinNT, but all I've found is a $200 package that's just a port of GNU stuff, and GNU irks me in too many ways for me to want to pay for it. 🙂

Dan, The article sounds good. I'm concerned about the possibility of system lockups. We just converted our Lantastic network from a peer-to-peer to a server layout and the system is finally reliable. We no longer run any programs from the server because of the problems that occur. Does Tapedisk load as a driver that is accessible across the network or is it strictly local? How reliable has it been for you? What drive are you using? We are trying to decide between an exabyte and a DAT drive. Thanks. Terry Gilbert
