Heh! That's funny. It would be worth it to dig it up. I think I would have to
hear it to believe it. I never would have guessed from what stuff of theirs I
have heard. I assumed they were a punk band that "mellowed" out a bit.

I like the Ministry quite a lot, although I don't have any of their cd's yet.
They had a really good number called something like "Jesus built my hotrod" or
"the Devil stole my Hotrod". Do you know it? It's the faster industrial/speed
metal song I've ever heard <g>.
Jesus Buit My Hotrod. That's a great Ministry song. It was one of the biggest
selling singles of its time, too, believe it or not. Gibby Hanes of the
Butthole Surfers co-wrote that song and did the cool megaphone vocals.

Excellent song. Have you done any animation for Ministry yet?
No, but I've done animation for the label of an ex ministry drummer (Invisible
Records). I'll be doing some animation for Prong, a band with two members of
Killing Joke, real soon, and maybe some Skinny Puppy, too.

Whoa, dude! I saw Killing Joke at my college (Manchester Poly, UK) in 1984 or
so. They did a great live show. Skinny Puppy? I'm not familiar with them.
Sounds like doing animation for bands you'd have to be really abstract and
creative.
I love Killing Joke. Skinny Puppy is a very popular hardcore industrial band
from Vancouver (they moved to LA a couple of years ago). They'll have a new
release coming out in a couple of months (my friend the ex drummer from Killing
Joke is the producer). You're right about the abstract creative stuff, and
it's been a battle getting to do this sort of thing, because my reel is so
commercial. BTW, I've been sick in bed, and haven't been able to get the dubs
made yet… maybe I'll give you the tape at NAB, yeah?

I may not see you at NAB. I will only be there from Sunday afternoon to Monday
evening. I can't miss more than 1 day of work, ya' know <g>.

Just to show you how out of touch some of us are with current groups, I
naturally assumed you were talking literally of doint religious animation for
the ministry. I couldn't help but laugh when I read it as one of the first
pieces of animation I did in Charlotte was for PTL when Jim and Tammy were
still at large.
Wouldn't you know it, of all the clients we ever had, PTL was the only one to
ever stiff us on the bill. When our comptroller attempted to collect, we
received a letter from them telling us that they knew God himself had guided us
through the animation and that God would provide.
Unfortunately, God was a bit short that year and we never collected anything
but the letter from the ministry.

Seeing as how God was a little short, the courts ultimately let all
the creditors line up for payments and amazingly paid the bill about
5 years late. Truth is stranger than fiction.

Relating this to 3d… did anyone out there see the blurb in
Animation magazine about the Beavis/Butthead video with Cher? There
is some kind of VR theme to the video, where B&B are singing with
Cher thru a virtual interface or something silly like that…. ANYWAY
part of the video is a 3d rendered B&B thang – can you imagine
modeling these guys? what a hoot….
If I remember correctly, there was a phsycedelic tunnel (what a 3D
cliche that's becoming) like the one in the Peter Gabriel "Steam"
video, and some Lawnmower mannish stuff.

You're gonna hate this. The only recording I have of Ministry is a promo EP of
"Work For Love" (released in 1983). I used to mix this song in with
Kajagoogoo, Blancmange and oh yes – Howard Jones. I saw them play in NYC on
Pier 84 back in those days.

Man, you guys are trying to set me into a psychotic episode of 80's
love/hate melancholy… BUT IT WON'T WORK!!! <g>.
Let's not forget Wall of VooDoo, Nena, Boys don't cry, Ah-Ha,
Culture Club, etc., etc (G). That's all I can remember, I listened to
the death-thrash type metal and punk for most of the eighties, so
let's see, we got slayer, D.R.I., death, megadeath, Anthrax, bathory,
raven, exodus, Corrosion of conformity, black flag, Weremacht, Celtic
frost, Stormtroopers of death, the mentors, and of course, Metallica.
Any deeper than that, I gotta start diggin into my old records 🙂 so,
you ready for the Lithium yet? (g)
I didn't like metal much (I did like hardcore punk, though) back when
vynil was big, but I like it now. Metallica's going to be doing some
fun stuff this summer, and an album next fall. They're pretty much
my favorite metal band, and they're fun to hang with, too (they're
local SF boys).
New album eh? They are one of my favorite bands. I've been listening
to them since 84. Only band I've seen live twice and liked both
times. Saw em once in a tiny little club years ago on their Ride the
Lighning tour, then again on their last tour. I can't believe that
was 9 years ago already.

cool. I interviewed (and worshipped) most of the bands on that list.
Evil Chuck S. of Death lives down the road, eats dinner at the local
chicken wing place. He is still suprised when anyone recognizes him.

I can't say I worshipped every band I named. Bathory was a bunch of
noise, Raven was an arena-band wannabe, and the mentors whole concept
was to sing about mysogyny. Good for really irritating people with a
boom box, but not much else. Mercyful Fate was good for spooking
people about satanisim, except nobody could understand what he was
singing about. Same goes for Venom (whatever happened to these guys,
anyway?). You listen to Anthrax much? I noticed they gotta new
singer. What happened to Joe Belladonna, anyway?
Ok, worshipped was a poor choice of words. Actually I wasn't into
Bathory, Raven (isn't that the band whose drummer kept oxygen beside
the drum set?!), Bathory, or the Mentors at all. I did a metal show
on Sat. nights for about 4 years of my college experience. Got to
meet and interview just about everyone you mentioned. King Diamond
was actually the coolest and nicest guy I met! Very down to earth,
but definitely strange. Last I saw, Venom was on K-Tel records…
hehehehehe. I use to really like Anthrax … Among the Living was a
fantastic album. They really sucked after that I'm the Man single,
though. Joe Belladonna is out? He and the drummer made that band. Oh
well. They were a bunch of ego-maniac jerks anyway.

Anthrax: ego-maniac jerks? I would've never guessed. They seemed like ok guys
to me, but then again, I never met them. Too bad.

Sounds like my record collection… except I didn't care for most pop
oriented stuff. I've got like Nina Hagen, The Contortions (James
Black), Jonathan Richman (disgruntled employee?!), all that Eno
produced stuff like Talking Heads, Jerry Harrison, etc…, and tons
of Eno (my hero).

Yeah, I got me some Nina Hagen (Fearless and a promo copy of Cosma Shiva –
sounds a lot like the Doors' Changeling don't you think?), some Jerry Harrison
with and w/o the Casual Gods, the Modern Lovers and the 'Heads.
Trivia Question: What do the Urban Verbs have to do with any of the bands
we've mentioned?
Although I got my fair share of synth-pop from the 80's my taste was
always for the harder edge like the Pistols, Clash, the Jam, XTC, the
Teardrop Explodes and the Gang of Four (Now I play Social Distortion
really loud as therapy). Although I never really got too into Eno
(other than My Life in the Bush of Ghosts) I prefered Wall of Voodoo,
Godley and Creme (their album Freezeframe is still one of my favorite
albums of all time) in the more esoteric vein.
Have you ever checked out anything by Eberhard Schoener? (Ignore this
question unless you like the Police)
I'll be offering "Invalid Normal Array" as a song/band title to all of
my musician friends. I just know I could slam to a song by that
title. :+}

I caught XTC in Chicago back in 1982 (Hazel O'Connor opened). The
bass line truly jiggled my pancreas when they opened with "real by
reel". Their sound was overwhelming but not too loud. Damn shame
that they don't appear in public anymore.

message?<g> Yeah, Andy needs to get hip-no-tized (as Letterman would
say) to get over his stage-fright.
I'll second The Clash, Pistols, Gang of Four, and a few other good
thrash bands. I have such a lousy head for names that I forget what
bands I like <g>. Of course, I'm a hugeultrabigtimemassive Iggy Pop
fan, and what about NY Dolls, Lou Reed, Patti Smith (love her!), and
onandonandon… music… ahhhh.
The Urban Verbs' singer, Roddy Franz, was the brother of Chris Franz
(talking heads, jerry harrison, tom-tom club, eno/byrne, etc…
drummer). Scary, huh?

Thanks to David Rhoten I'm in the middle of an 8 CD jam of XTC. Now I'll have
to crank some Urban Verbs. My neighbors must hate my ass, they could be
pounding down my door right now and I wouldn't hear them.
I have a good friend at a small label in NYC whom I have convinced to slip me a
demo tape of a soon to be release single to try my hand at creating my first
ever rock video. I still have a long way to go on the animation learning
curve. I hope your project is successful. Can you disclose who its for?
