All,
I need a good PC/PAR/VTR set-up…..I'd like to stay uder 6,000 dollars. I was
thinking a Gateway 486/66VL with the PAR and I'm not sure what S-VHS machine to
buy.
Does anyone sell a complete package ready to go out of the box?

Sounds like you're getting ready to have some fun, but it'll be very
tough to get all that in at under $6k. I think you'll get fairly
close to that just with a PC that can run 3DS (32megs ram, big HD,
17" monitor) and the PAR. Since you don't absolutely need timecode
(unless you're doing work that will need to be edited using timecode)
you could probably get away with a consumer S-VHS deck for a while. I
just picked up a JVC with jog-shuttle and random edit (not insert
edit) capabilities for under $700 for my regular TV. Any decent
industrial grade S-VHS deck will run you near $2k, and that's without
timecode, maybe without RS 232 or 422.

Thats all bad news, I was thinking a Gateway 486/66 for around 3,000
and the DPS PAR for 2,500 and a real-time S-vhs for 500-1000.
I just can't spend 10,000 on a system.
The 700 dollar JVC is good news….where did you get it? and what's the model
#?

The JVC video deck is just a consumer model, you can probably find it at any
consumer electronics shop like Good Guys, Circuit City, etc… .
I don't think you'll have to pay $10K, but $6K is a little tight.

BTW does the JVC also play VHS, I know some S-VHS machines do.

Yes, the JVC will also play S-VHS (I think all S-VHS machines can do that).

I hope that if they are S-VHS they must play S-VHS, not BetaSP! <g> yes, I know
what you meant to say, all S-VHS machines run VHS tapes 🙂

Yes, SVHS will read VHS but not viceversa.

Thanks for the info…..I guess it only makes sense to get a S-VHS machine
for my TV VTR replacement…..huh? I could use it as a back-up animation
VTR for the one I'm going to get for my computer.
BTW, would you have a comment on what computer I should get…I narrowed
it down to two, a Gateway Pentium 66 or a DEC 486/66 XL. The gateway
has more equipment but I sure like the expandability and performance of the
DEC XL's………Any thoughts?

I will only say two things:
One, I have two XLs in front of me,
and two, cows are bad for the planet and I simply don't like gold (wow!) logos!

ps.I doubt that the Gateway can stand against the DEC. Really, I can think in
anything better engineered. AS a plus, it is upgradable to any next generation
of Pentium chip plus (and this is the best side) an Alpha AXP processor. In the
other side, the Gateways come in spoted boxes <G>

I think you've been staring at you screen to long.(g) I asked if S-VHS
machines played "VHS" tapes…….somebody had told me they weren't
interchangable.

PMJI, I think I know what you heard. An SVHS deck that accepts a VHS-size
tape cassette can play back stuff recorded in either SVHS or VHS mode. But
some high-grade machines also (or instead) accept a compact cassette similar to
(but not identical, I think) 8 millimetre and record/play in SVHS mode from
that.
There are also SVHS videos that accept both formats. The last JVC i have saw
looks pretty good and can do that. Seems to be an editing deck. Anyone has seen
one?

JVC BR-822 or BR-622. I had a glimpse of the 822 and that's where I first
saw this compact SVHS cassette.
